I really, really want one.

I think the last thing I wanted this much was a ColecoVision, back when I was 11 or so. Of course, I never did get that ColecoVision, so maybe my chances aren't so good.

I just wanted you to know, Noemon, that even the times I don't respond to your threads, I almost always end up sending those links onto my oldest son at college. Most everything you pull up is so interesting -- and just the kind of thing he likes.

I think he is beginning to think we need a subscription to New Scientist.

I don't know. I still like the kind Ripley used in Aliens.

How does it manage to keep the center of gravity over the wearer's legs without forcing him to bend over?

[Smile] Thanks Farmgirl! New Scientist is by far my favorite of all the magazines I've ever subscribed to. The print edition is even better than the online version, and because it's a weekly, you never have to wait very long for the next issue after you've finished the current one. It's a little pricy, but you can often get a deal that allows you to get it for about a dollar an issue, which isn't bad.

Dude, I'm right there with you. But I'd imagine the price tag is a bit beyond the average consumer.

Well of *course* I eventually want a full suit of Gamma World style battle armor, but this'll have to do for now.

In answer to your question, zgator, I wish I knew. The article doesn't go into enough depth. I'll have to dig a little deeper.

That's exactly what my mom said about the ColecoVision Mike! Well, except that she said "our family" instead of "average consumer".

You only have to convince your wife now, right? That should be much easier.

What's interesting to me is that I've heard of (though I haven't read them) several studies that showed that strength-enhancing exoskeletons were pretty much impossible, that the human body is "designed" to work with an endoskeleton and just isn't compatible with an exoskeleton. I think it had something to do with the body bein unable to deal with the kinds of shock it would receive. Although, I think the studies I've heard of were geared toward exoskeletons that would enhance things like jumping, which is going to produce significantly more shock than carrying.

Noemon,
how come there isn't a photo of you/your wife up on Foobonic? I'm trying to picture what you would look like with that exoskeleton on..... (maybe, with a little photoshop help, we could do a virtual Noemon exoskeleton)

How many minutes away are we from the battle suits in starship troopers?

Not very many I think.

Farmgirl, I just sent you an email message.

Got it! (had to scramble out to my home e-mail from here)

I always pictured you older than that--- must be because you're married, I guess.

Could definately see you in that robotic suit!

From Neuromancer, Case thinks on his current inability to access the net:

"All the meat wants and the meat needs...."

Sounds applicable here. I'd rather have a full body replacement than an exoskeleton though.

Stupid Meat!

Well, it's not really, but a lot less people go there than go here.

I'm 32, by the way; a lot of people have remarked on my looking young in that picture, which kind of surprised me. Maybe it's because you can't see my bald spot in that shot? Usually, when I'm out with my wife, people think that I'm a cradle robbing pervert. She's 34, but at the high school where she teaches, people who don't know her have mistaken her for a high school student. I find that a bit odd, actually; she looks like she's in her mid-20s to me.
