I was scrolling through a thread and I happened to catch that Yozhik's date of registration was "A Long Time Ago!" When, exactly, does your date make the transition to anonymity? I know there's Hatrackers runnin' around with 1999 dates, so is it after five years? And, if it is, does it mean five years from the current date, or five years from January 1st of the current year?

It doesn't work that way. That setting can only be assigned by the mods on any UBB board; on Hatrack, only the batch that originally transferred over from BML got that "date" assigned. That means Yozhik, aka, and a handful of others who still post.

So we newbies are doomed to ever wander in search of that rarefied status. [Wink]

If you look at the registration numbers, it's clear that a number of people were basically imported from the BML forums -- but not all (like, say, me.) After that initial batch, it looks like accounts were established in alphabetical order for almost the first 200 names.

This means that anybody with a member number under 200 has basically been here since the beginning, but people who're listed as "A Long Time Ago" were extra-special to our hosts back then, or something. [Smile]

I'm glad *somebody* thinks I'm special.

We all think you're special, Yozhik. [Smile] We just don't say it enough -- sorry 'bout that! (((((Yozhik)))))

I'll stick to being happy I squeezed in before AK's main account, alphabetics be damned.

I'm not special? [Cry]

Well at least I've got the lowest member number in this thread (and that's saying something). [Big Grin]

(Edit: and lowest post count. Yay, 400!)

Mike, I'm not sure WHY you don't have a reg date of A Long Time Ago. It's very odd -- of the members with numbers below 100, about 3/4 of those that still exist (a surprising number no longer do) have the ALTO date, and the the rest have various dates in 98/99.

Most curious.

[Addit: Actually, it's members #120 and below . . . It's Moose's fault!]

I thought it had something to do with being on Hatrack River through all of its various incarnations... (shrugs) But I could be wrong.

I thought so too, but there are a number of ALTO folks who posted like once, or three times, and then never again.

Which tends to make me suspect that theory. [Dont Know]

There never was an automatic switchover from the BML. I was Anne Kate Ard on the BML. They tried to encourage use of real names over there. What happened was that UBB went through several versions near the beginning, I think. Anyway, those of us who registered for the very first version didn't have any registration dates assigned. There wasn't a field like that then. Then when we went to a later version, those without reg dates went in with "A long time ago" in that field. At yet another update, we got member numbers. That wasn't originally a field either. At that time, the member numbers were assigned alphabetically, with capital letters first, then lowercase, in ascii order, obviously. So then we all had member numbers from that point forward, and the new numbers were assigned in the order that people registered.

Does that clear things up?

Actually, yes -- now I understand the mix of 98s 99s and ALOTs in the first 120. Thanks ak. [Smile]
