Things had died down. The chicken wings were gone, the chocolate cake was packed up, and the caramel popcorn balls were saved for my mom. Conversation had crept back down to the same topics that had been used to start it. People were leaving.
My dad approaches another man as he holds the door open for his wife. Both men are notorious for corny jokes, and are not to be reckoned with.
"Hey Bob, I got a joke for you. What do you call a woman who can only use one leg?"
A faint "oof" is heard, followed by the other man's wife screaming.
"Agh, my leg! I heard something snap."
Standing less then ten feet away, I, naturally, am laughing my head off. I just barely had enough control to hold my tongue from shouting "Dawn!" in reply to my father's joke.
Unfortunately, the people behind me weren't close enough to hear my dad's joke, and are giving me some of the most shocked looks I had received recently.
She was escorted to the Emergency Room by her husband and another couple. I won't know what happened to her 'til I see her again on Wednesday. I feel sorry for the husband in that family: not only did this happen, but his son was absent from the bookstudy 'cause he has developed a cyst near his tailbone.
But my dad and I are still laughing.
The answer to the joke was "Eileen", by the way.
