Here are some hilarious translation blunders from some Russian pirated versions of FotR.

http://fan.theonering.net/henneth-annun/stories/aksman356.htm

quote:
Galadriel (Starting from: "I amar prestar aen…"): Yummy pestle…

The world is crooked.
I soak it up with the water,
I see it in the eyes,
I inhale it with the air.

And none, who now lives, remembers anything at all…

(And after reading the rest of the stuff, you would agree with her [Smile] )

This part is killing me

quote:
Mind-slowed Gandalf in Moria talks about Bilbo's pity

Variant 1:
Frodo: "Gollum... It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill him".
Gandalf: "Yes, it's a pity". (and that's it!)
Gandalf, later: "The pity of Bilbo could screw up the fate of many".

Variant 2:
Frodo: "It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill him long time ago.
Gandalf: "It's a pity that Bilbo… [pause] is not with him at the moment. Many of them deserve to die. Many of the decent people are dead. Frodo, let him go his way. Don't judge and you won't be judged. My heart tells me that Golom can't tell a difference between good and evil. Bilbo's life can change fate of many creatures."
(From: "Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo’s hand. Many that live deserve death, and some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo?
Do not be too eager to deal out death and judgement. Even the very wise can not see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or ill, before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many".)

Gandalf continues: "Who are we to debate what fate has prepared for us. We can only rule and also better organize our time. There are a lot of forces in the world which can free a desire. Bilbo was lucky to find the Ring which you would be happy to have as well. It's an encouraging thought."
(From: "So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world Frodo besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the ring, in which case you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought.")

On a slightly different note:
TORN Linkie

quote:

Asfaloth writes: HERE'S A SCOOP! Last night PJ said that he'd just finished editing the Extended Edition of "The Return of the King" and the running time was 4 hours and 10 minutes. He said there are 50 minutes of new scenes in the cut. Woo hoo!!! Can't wait!

King DVD Adds New Scenes

Director Peter Jackson told Entertainment Weekly magazine that some of the hour's worth of extra footage cut from the theatrical release of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King could find its way into the upcoming DVD edition. "I'm going to work on an extended DVD version, though I don't think all of that will make it in, because the pacing would be really weird," Jackson told the magazine. "But there's some good stuff that's not in the book."

Among the excised scenes: a humorous bit between Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) and Legolas (Orlando Bloom) having a drinking competition. "I really quite liked [it]," Jackson said. "But we felt [it was too comedic] at a point when we wanted to set up the tension of the story. And there's a sequence of Sam [Sean Astin] and Frodo [Elijah Wood] disguised as orcs, where they end up in the orc army for a while."

I'm getting a strong tug pulling me toward the Green Book section of TORn.

Here's a remark one of the green-bookers made in reply to someone's question could a balrog be female.

quote:
Whether a spirit that is female in temper would embody itself as a violent creature of dark flame wielding a flaming whip must remain a matter of your own judgment and, perhaps, predilections. One does not easily suppose that Tolkien would have thought so.
It struck me immediately that this person must never have visited hatrack. [Big Grin]

I just sorta took it for granted that Balrogs were female.

I figured Gandalf got her wrath because he left the seat up or something.

Or forgot a coaster. Don't forget the coaster. Seems like a Gandalf thing to do.

Coaster? Look, that's why you leave the magazines on the coffee table. No funky coasters, and always something to read.

Word to that. The reader's digest at my house has absorbed so much water it's fused together into a gelatinous block of paper.

OMG!!!! [ROFL]

I am reading the unabridged "Three Musketeers" right now, wishing I had done better in French so I could read the original version - because there are pieces that just don't make sense.

After reading this thread, I don't feel so bad!

No doubt "Scary Movie 4" will be an unnatural union of American Pie and LOTR.
