I realized last night that today is the first anniversary of the Columbia accident. It looks like NASA has another team lined up, including a Japanese astronaut. The NASA website has some interviews with the astronauts. It's amazing to see their dedication and courage. Although I have serious reservations about the space shuttle program itself, I'm glad to see that we're not abandoning manned missions.

One thing I found sort of funny was the interview with James Kelly, one of the pilots.
quote:
I grew up in Iowa right across the cornfield from the airport so I got to see planes taking off and landing every night.
Iowa cornfields...look, it's Captain James T. Kirk!

There is something about those corn fields that makes you want to lay there and stare up into the starry sky. [Wink]

I'm also glad they haven't abandoned manned spaceflight. I still dream about "going up" despite the risks. Then again, I'd volunteer for a one way ticket.

*is bummed that I'm at work and can't watch Contact or SpaceCamp or The Right Stuff...sigh*

I know what you mean - "The Right Stuff" is one of my favorite films. I keep trying to find a copy that I can afford, so that I can watch it whenever I want to, but I haven't managed to do so yet.

Hold out until you have the money. There's a really great special edition DVD. I haven't had a chance to watch all the extras, butit comes in a pretty silver case. [Wink]

[Edit: Walmart has it for about $20.]

Anyone who wants to go into space should check out S.T.A.R.SystemsInc. They offer rides to the edge of the atmosphere, for a price of course.

Two other friends and I had a showing of the Cowboy Bebop epi with the Columbia to comemorate the moment.

I don't know that Hatrack as a group boycotts anything. Does anyone on this board not have a nemesis who will deliberately do the opposite of whatever you decide? Then there are the rebels who spit into whatever wind is prevailing.
