I remember watching Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Greenjeans when I was a little girl. He'll be missed!

That is really sad. I'm told I used to watch Howdy Doody when I was a kid, but I don't remember it. What I remember is Captain Kangaroo.

I grew up with him - my most regular TV companion through childhood. I remember when I was around 4 years old, he actually came through town and my Mom took me to see him at a shopping mall he appeared at.

It was crowded - I waved frantically the whole time. What I don't remember - but my mother swears - is that I cried when Captain Kangaroo didn't recognize me and wave to me in the crowd. It never dawned on me that he didn't know me like I knew him.

Captain Kangaroo introduced me to science - magnetism, weather, electricity. And he was the one that first inroduced me to the Peer Gynt Suite. Not to mention Curious George. [Smile]

Sad news.

But I'm enjoying some good memories right now. [Smile]

I used to watch Captain Kangaroo when I was a kid. The only thing I remember about the show was that ping-pong balls used to fall on his head.

I should add that when "In the Hall of the Mountain King" from the Peer Gynt Suite played on the show, it was background music for Dancing Bear bowling in a cave.

And I forgot to say "Thank you" to the Captain. His place in my childhood memories is unique and prominent.

(edited to add: Farmgirl, I have already exposed my age and have discovered there a number of people who are not at all bashful about calling me "old." [Smile]

I actually teared up this morning when I heard it on the radio. *sniff*

I almost hate to think what my kids will be nostalgic over when they are 35. Tinky-winky? Has anyone caught that new pre-schoolers show on PBS? I've forgotten the title. It looks a lot like the Teletubbies only without the telly in their tubbies.

I am proud to say that I am a Captain Kangaroo kid through and through. Grew up watching him (and Bunny Rabbit and Mr. Greenjeans and Mr. Moose and Grandfather Clock). And I'm not afraid to say that and expose my age. His show was class and so was he.

I didn't realize so many people here were older than me. I remember the Captain, but only just. Still, I'm sorry he's gone.

I feel like I've lost a family member. He taught me and my sis so much when we were little kids. God, I loved that bunny rabbit! I hope they release them all on DVD so if I ever have kids I can share him with them.

We've been reminiscing about Captain Kangaroo at home tonight. Diane's a couple years older than me and grew up with him too. Seems I remember a lot more about the show though. I was able to describe and name favorite books that were done on the show (still shot of a full page illustration while the narrator read.). And remembered once again how I grew up with a character (Mr. Moose) who would do anything for the chance to fixate and zone out on a bunch of dropping ping pong balls.

I'm really really sad, but am happy to get back in touch with how much I still can remember of the show.

Bob Keeshan grew into the role over the years - literally. In an interview I read many years ago, he said when he first did the show he put on a gray wig and put padding under his suit. Years went by, he looked in the mirror - and there was the Captain! No more padding or gray wig needed. [Smile]
