So . . . is getting the last word in wrong?

Just a question.

Posted by Belle (Member # 2314) on :

No.

I don't know that I'd mind dying with "I told you so...." on my lips.

Anybody who's ever posted on this thread says "no".

I doubt my last word words will be verbal. Hand gesture works for me. [Wink]

I think it's a horrible habit, to always have the last word.

It's one of those society-accepted personality traits that I find acidic. It's like fake compliments, passive-aggressive behavior, and snarky looks.

Well, you would go against the accepted norm, wouldn't you?

(Ooops - that was like getting in the last word, wsan't it . . . [Razz] )

Nope, I've got the last word. And nobody better try taking it away. Or ELSE.

I don't know, I don't have to have the last word usually. My sister always does. [Razz] [Wink]

I care more about what is said, not who gets the last say.

Posted by Ryuko (Member # 5125) on :

Definitely. It's more important to make a good point than to have the last say, especially when the last say is something like, "Oh, Oh yeah! Well... .... ... [Razz] "

I like other people to have the last word, just so long as it's "hey, you're right!"

Getting it accidentally or as a result of conversation? No.

Needing to have the last word? Yes. It's pride. And it betrays an insecurity of some sorts. It's a forced triumph, since the only way to truly have the last word is to have the other person capitulate. It's a power trip.

When you're right, it will come out eventually.

But I'm always right . . .

Except when I'm wrong . . .

And I have no problem admitting either of those two things! [Big Grin]

See, both of those statements are centered around yourself...

It isn't about the issue at hand, nor about the person to whom you are speaking. It's pride. [Smile]

When a conversation is dragging, I usually say, "You are right. I am wrong. Neither of these things are relevant to the formation of my opinions." Of course, the phrasing might be a little different.

I was wondering about this in a recent Hatrack debacle. If you walk away from a fight, then people think you're a sissy.

Posted by Danzig (Member # 4704) on :

Who cares?

Who's everyone?

Hatrack doesn't have a uniform opinion on ANYTHING (not even OSC!), so there is no chance at all for there to be a uniform opinion of a poster. Heck, even the most idiotic, virulent, onanistic, cruel poster had his defenders.

The thing is, there is no collective audience. There is no collective opinion. It doesn't matter what that blind audience thinks, because it doesn't even really exist. There are only individuals, and you can't please or impress all individuals anyway, so why let a fear of that illusory collective opinion shape your actions?

In answer to "Who Cares?", the truth is even those random people who may think someone who walks away from a pointless fight is a sissy don't even care that much. They'll forget it by the next day, but what you do is what you become. You can't forget.

Favorite last words:

"The horror! The horror!"

or

"O! I am slain!"

but only because it's funny to me how Shakespearean characters announce the fact that they're dead.
