So, I was fooling around online, avoiding writing a synopsis when I came across this:

http://www.livejournal.com/users/ewan_pics/

The top picture made me realize, probably, one reason I think Ewan McGregor is so hot. That is, that he's really very similar to my beloved in many ways. I mean, look at this:

http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/oliviafowler/album?.dir=/Temporary&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/oliviafowler/my_photos

Admittedly, that's an older pic of Ron-- he's 12 years older and about 60 lbs heavier now-- but it definitely speaks to TYPE. Are we all complet monkeys about what we find attractive in a person of the opposite sex (or the gender you prefer)?

I mean, is the fact that I find those particular men, with their similar coloring etc. somehow related to the fact that my papa was a redhead with freckles? He's not my biological father, but he's been the stable, loving male presence through most of my life. Did I just, like, imprint on him like a newly-hatched duckling, unconsciously looking for a mate that reminded me of him? That is actually rather a horrifying thought, despite sounding rather likely.

There are a few others that seem to fit the profile of "I can't even explain WHY I think they're attractive." Conan O'Brian, for one.

I like extreme coloring - blond and blue eyes, or else dark eyes, dark skin, dark hair. I have no explanation for this.

But I still think Ewan McGregor is breathtaking. [Big Grin] It's the smile. And the crinkly eyes. And the rakish charm. And the dulcet voice. And the smile. And the streak of wicked delight. And the dimples. And the smile.

Wow, Olivia, that's uncanny.

I know , CT. I know.

In general, I go for pale skin and light hair, though I have had some inexplicable attractions to men with dark hair, or, uh, no hair. Now that I think about THAT, though, it roughly fits the description of my biological father. Those usually fall into the 'male authority figure' catagory or the 'bad boy' category, neither of which I ever considered relationship material.

God, I AM a monkey. [Eek!]

Its a simple formula that I've figured out after a coworker (back in the movie theater days) would show me picture after picture of guys from her magazine that she, and the managers, found attractive.

Of course, I can't reveal this formula publically. If I did, any guy could fake being as hot as I fake it.

[Big Grin]

As far as I can tell, though, women who attract me aren't at all like my mother.

Posted by Bob the Lawyer (Member # 3278) on :

Wait, let me guess the secret! It's, "Have you picture in a magazine." isn't it, T?

<worries about T spending so much time looking at picture after picture of hot guys>

It's probably just the Elektra complex (penis envy), etc.

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

Well, since my picture IS in a lot of ::mumbleJapanesemumble:: magazines, then that COULD be it. But it's not the forumla I have in mind.

I applied the formula to the picture that got some of the Chatraqueras to reffer to me as 'Hot Nathan.' Nothing but success from that point on.

Posted by Javert Hugo (Member # 3980) on :

So all it takes for me to be hot is to have me picture a magazine?

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

No, you're already hot. You are naturally hot.

All I'm saying is that there is a formula guys can use to fake being hot.

Posted by zgator (Member # 3833) on :

Can the women really not tell when you're faking it T?

Posted by zgator (Member # 3833) on :

I don't have to fake being hot. I have blond hair and blue eyes. According to kat, I qualify.

Besides, I'm married. I can go bald and get fat now.

Posted by Olivet (Member # 1104) on :

See, there could be an element of race memory to it, too. I'm Scots-Irish on one side and Shawnee on the other.

So maybe I'm genetically hard wired to go for Celts. My mom sure was. [Dont Know]

A woman finds a man attractive if other women find him attractive; a man would not be in a magazine if he was not considered attractive by some women, thus the fact that he is in a magazine makes him per definition attractive. The secret to become attractive -- or hot -- is to have your loyal female friends spread the word that they find you attractive, and soon all females will consider you attractive.

It is a peer pressure thing, really. No, don't thank me for enlightening you; just spread the word that I'm hot.

Posted by Olivet (Member # 1104) on :

A LOT of people find, I dunno, Hugh Jackman and Russel Crowe attractive. I don't. Not at all. Nor Mel Gibson.

I like Sean Connery, but only old and bald. I like Brad Pitt, but only in clean-shaven pretty boy mode. I like Alan Rickman however he happens to be.

But the ones who TOP my list actually resemble my Beloved in some way.

Typically... dark hair, dark eyes. Though... it's funny: since I've been with Paul (lighter hair with blue-green eyes) I've been noticing people that fit his "type" more than anything else. [Dont Know]

Tristan...northern Europe...

You're blond and blue-eyed, aren't you? I knew it! It's uncanny!

I'm a big fan of redheads. [Smile]

I've never really considered a guy's coloring as a reason to be attracted to him before though. I've like guys of all different color schemes. Mostly, if I like their personality, I find myself attracted to them physically.

Of course, it doesn't hurt when you think they're the most marvelous person ever and they also happen to be cute.

Sappiness aside, I don't think we're as biologically programmed for love as we like to think we are. I think personality really overcomes a lot of genetic predispositions. Though I have always had this really strange wish to have redhaired children.... weird.

Posted by MyrddinFyre (Member # 2576) on :

Type? Eh. I think everyone is hot.

Posted by pH (Member # 1350) on :

This is true...personality is obviously a big factor. But based solely on looks, I'll go for a dark-haired, blue-eyed man over a blonde anytime. Why? I don't know. One of my ex-boyfriends admitted that his idea of a physically perfect girl included red hair and blue eyes...which, fortunately, I have. [Cool]

I wonder what sort of reason there _is_ for those sorts of "types." I mean, my father has always had silver hair and hazel eyes, so that really can't have much to do with it...

Of course, it's not like I've abandoned liking men with shaved heads. Oh, not in the least. *dreamy sigh* But men with dark hair who shave their heads and also have blue eyes? Oh, dear...

I just realized that my father is also very muscular and well-defined.

And I tend to gravitate towards THAT as well...

I have actually heard quite often that women who had loving, caring fathers end up marrying men who remind them of their fathers (though physical appearance is only one facet of that).

I don't think that it works the same way in men. However, most guys that I know (myself included) have one basic physical type which they find more attractive than the rest. For me it is short girls with dark hair, dark eyes and olive skin.

Posted by Olivet (Member # 1104) on :

Well, see, Ron always used to go for redheads, even though he insists now that he likes brunettes better (his argument being that most redheads have pale brows, etc. and lack facial definition because of it-- which oddly enough, I agree that a really good looking guy with natural light hair is hard to find, but anyway).

I know he's not just saying that because of the actresses he goes for, notably in the Catherine Zeta Jones mold. So, we were looking through his folk's old photo albums and, lo and behold, there was his mom as a young woman. Thin, brunette, and with a big smile. [Angst]

Here's hoping I don't turn into a big ol' controlling nag. [Wink]

Eastern European/Russian Jews. I had a great deal of fun at one point going through my photos and sorting out the guys I found attractive. Fairly wide range of body types and coloring, but every last one is Jewish and from Eastern Europe or Russia. My friends used to tease me about it endlessly.

And no, my dad is not Jewish or Eastern European or Russian. And none of the guys I find attractive look anything like my dad. Most of them are about as nerdy, though.

I never find actors or other people I don't know in person particularly attractive. Some of the characters they portray I find very attractive, but the actor alone hardly ever interests me.

Posted by pH (Member # 1350) on :

Actors are attractive because they're completely make-believe. They're pretend people who live inside your head. [Big Grin]

I'm not sure genetics has much to do with how men pick their mates. My wet dream girls vary from tall Irish redheads with green eyes to blue-eyed, dark-haired Italians to most types of Ricans. My mother, on the other hand, is a medium-sized Northern European mutt (mostly Norwegian) with pale skin and brown eyes and black hair. No evidence of her anywhere in my dates.

Similarly, I doubt Jacare's mother had olive skin -- or is he less white than I thought?

Women, on the other hand, have an uncanny ability to date their fathers. That's part of the reason why I dislike meeting my dates' fathers -- if I get called "daddy," I want her to be thinking of me.

Not that I get called "daddy" nearly often enough, with the notable exception of T_Smith, but still.

My dad has medium skin tone, dark brown hair and hazel eyes.

I think I go for NotThat - which leads to the coloring extremes.

Posted by Olivet (Member # 1104) on :

My dad had black hair and steel blue eyes. He was actually a sort of dark Irish poster boy in his youth, though he was well into his 40s by the time I can remember him. He was also a chain smoker and a military man. A real hard case authoritarian. I definitely go for NotThat.

My first college boyfriend had dark brown, kinky-curly hair-- he could have had a real white-boy afro if he'd wanted-- and hazel eyes. But I never saw him as attractive until other girls were all telling me how lucky I was that THAT guy liked me. As a matter of fact, I kept getting him confused with other guys with similar characteristics-- to the point that I wondered why sometimes he'd save me a place in line in the cafeteria and other times he wouldn't speak to me. *snort*

Just call me Oblivia.

The first guy who caught my eye in college was a little blonde artistic fellow with pale eys and sharp but very pretty features. He had a long-distance girlfriend named Olga, but eventually decided he was gay (sometime after college, I heard from a mutual friend).

See, that's the trouble with liking the pretty ones-- a large portion are gay, and another chunk are stuck on themselves. *sigh* I lucked up with Ronnie, since he spent most of his youth on the chubby side and didn't seem aware of his looks when I met him. [Big Grin]

Nah, I'm exactly as white as you thought. As far as I know all of my ancestors within the last 300 years or so are basically Krauts, Micks or Limeys.

My eyes have a difficulty with choosing their color. You see, to different people on different occassions, they appear to be a different color. This was most notable in a psychology class where the teacher tried to put us in groups based upon eye color.

Since my birth records say they are blue, I went to the blue group.

The blue group told me they were green. So, I went to the green group. The green group told me they were more a steely gray (ya.. a steely gray).

And this happens a lot, not just in that psych class (with the exception of them being 'steely gray').

Posted by Javert Hugo (Member # 3980) on :

T_Smith, I have the same eyes. I say they are blue, but it depends on what I'm wearing.

What's more confusing is the irises are not the same color throughout. They are denim blue and gray on the outside, but the inside ring is green/khaki.

Posted by pH (Member # 1350) on :

Yes, the guys I fall for have a tendency to break hearts. *le emo sigh* But they're just so very pretty.

I also have the blue/grey/green eye-changing thing. I've always thought of them as blue, but one day when I went to the eye doctor, she was absolutely shocked at what a pale grey they were. And one time, someone told me they were lavender. Maybe I'm a mutant...*runs off to call Professor X*

I think I have the same type of eyes as you all are describing, mine usually lean more toward green or grey than blue, but blue would make the most sense, a few other members of my family cave blue eyes, I'm the only one with green, and it seems like the color looks different at times even to me.

Oh and on the whole type thing, I like girls with long hair, and have always been particularly attracted to girls with red hair and either green or brown eyes, and of moderate hieght but usually not taller than me, at least not by too much (I'm about 6 feet tall so that rarely comes up). Still I find girls more attractive if I like them personality wise, but if they happen to come close to that description in anyway it is a plus in my book.

I'm a sucker for a tall woman. Mmmmmm.

My mother, however, is not tall.

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

Well, my husband, who is 6'3" with a shaved head and very broad shoulders, looks very little like my father, who is short-ish with lots of dark hair and glasses. However, they have the same teasing, goofy senses of humor and the patience of saints.

As far as looks go, though, I have always tended to be attracted to men who are unlike my father in appearance--tall, big guys with broad shoulders and (usually) a belly. I also tend to like the appearance of actors that resemble that (or give the impression of resembling that, since we all know all actors except for Tim Robbins are short [Wink] )

What I've decided:
All guys in Florida hate tall women.
More guys in New Orleans love tall women.
When you're 6', it's hard to find a guy who's shorter than you, unless he's already dating a girl who's 5'2". [Mad]

*thinks* My dad is a 6'3" football-player/computer-geek. I think I'd like the modern-day equivalent of him.

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Ah, yes. Tall girls need to band together. We need to make regulations that short girls can only date guys of a maximum height and save all the tall ones for those who need them. And by need them, I mean that no one should have to wear flats to their wedding.

*I* do date a guy that is shorter than me. I seriously thought about it when I started dating him too. Then I decided that I shouldn't be a height bigot and got over it, mostly. Maybe it is rebellion due to the fact I got lectures on finding oneself a tall man, long before I was ever of dating age.

We are fairly close to the same height, (I'm about a half inch taller) but if he lets his fro grow a little it evens out. And heck I like him for his charming personality and biting sarcasm, not his height. And I'm klutzy so he has no difficulty sweeping me off my feet. Normally some sort of martial arts leg sweep from behind dumps me on my rear quite effectively.

Most guys I'm attracted to are at least 5'10" though. I figured (before Steve) that I should probably find someone at least as tall as my mother, so she wouldn't intimidate him as much.

Also I've always been on the lookout for dark hair and light eyes ever since I found out about genetic crossover on chromosomes in biology. I just thought being a statistical anomaly was cool My first crush was on a guy with pale skin freckles, dark brown hair and pure blue eyes. *sigh*
Maybe that was why I came down with that crush on Happy Camper more recently!

Oh my goodness.

I went to a college campus today, and asked one guy for directions. He was sitting down and looking at his books, but when he looked up, he had olive skin, black hair nicely touseled, needed a shave, enormously long black eyelashes, and vivid, bright-green eyes. My knees went weak.
