Here's an interesting bit -- the Clark campaign is complimenting the campaign manager of the Dean campaign for smacking down a CNN interviewer who was trying to imply that Dean asserted something he explicitly said he did not think.

Quite interesting, really.

I'm not a Dean fan, in fact he's one of least favorite canidates but that type of "reporting" still angers me. How the heck are we supposed to get the political system back on track when the media's just expounding the problem? [Mad]

Anyone who thinks that the media is Dean friendly is out of their mind. All the major media news outlets haven't been lacking when it comes to criticisms of Dean.

I have said before that I would vote before Joe Trippi not only before voting for Dean, but before voting for anyone else currently running for President. [Smile]

So let me get this straight.

If I were to be interviewed and I said "There are many rumors floating around that people have seen monkeys grow wings and fly around town. I, of course, don't believe that", then a reporter could later say that I said I believed in flying monkeys?

That's just wrong. [Frown]

As I understand it, Javert, they only do that if you're a Democrat. No worries.

So Dean goes around repeating a rumor just so he can say he doesn’t believe it and you think his motive is pure? Then why did he bring up the rumor (and in the first instance, he brought it up, not the interviewer)?

That’s a little like saying, “I just want it to be perfectly clear that I don’t believe the vicious rumors that my opponent beats his wife,” then getting indignant whenever a reporter brings it up because “I said I didn’t believe it.”

It’s a perfect setup for Dean – he gets the benefit of the Chomsky, et al., paranoid rumor-mongering without having to be associated with them directly. He gets to accuse Bush of conspiring in the deaths of 3,000 people and setting up electronic ballots to rig the election while not being said to engage in “negative campaigning?”

Of course he’s not trying to spread the rumor and maintain the high ground at the same time. No politician would try to do that.

Well, they’ve been doing it with Bush to try to make it seem as if he said Iraq was part of 9/11. Seems to have been successful, at least with several people on this board.

Wow – no wonder you like “No Cow Left Behind.” You are very easily amused.

I'd have to be pretty paranoid about politicians to assume it wasn't pure. After all, you don't think he may have just wanted to correct false rumors going around about himself?

(Besides, why would Dean want to spread false rumors about himself??)

Who said Dean was spreading rumors about himself. It was not a rumor that he brought up the Saudi warning rumor – he did bring it up, unprompted, in the original interview. Now he gets to reply indignantly about the rumors in subsequent interviews, without bringing them up himself.

Dean is spreading rumors about Bush by claiming to disbelieve them. He had to know that the press would seize on that portion of his statement when he made it.

It sounded to me like he was actually bringing out those rumors to shut them dowm, and even if he wasn't, even if he just wanted to accuse Bush without saying he was, the fact is that Paula Zhan refused to read the whole thing, she refused to give us information because she wanted the viewers to get her side only, I don't care if it was a ploy by Deam, it sure as heck wasn't reporting by Zahn.

Hobbes, you're confusing two separate interviews. The Zahn piece was one in which Dean's campaign rep attempted to defend Dean from accusations of rumor-mongering -- based on an earlier interview in which Dean had mentioned a Saudi rumor.

Now, I think it's pretty obvious from transcripts of the original rumor what Dean was trying to say -- that Bush needs to work harder to avoid giving our enemies the opportunity to spread vicious rumors about us -- but I can also understand why a soundbyte-obsessed American media would seize on his "for example" as if he meant it, himself.

No I'm not Tom, I'm saying that in the interview with Zahn and Dean's rep Zahn refused to read the context of the quote she was using to accuse Dean with even after pressed to do so by Dean's Rep.

Please don't think I'm defending Zahn - in general, the sound-bite obsessed nature of the press is the reason such tactics exist, and the reason why complex messages cannot generally be delivered to the American people.
