First, the very best Christmas album ever made:

A Charlie Brown Christmas by The Vince Guraldi Trio. You really can't get any better than that. I got it because I always liked "Linus and Lucy", but the whole album is perfect. The best of the many Christmas albums I own, by a wide margin.

Next, the worst Christmas song:

"This Christmas"

A couple of years ago, I got an otherwise decent Christmas album that was marred by the presence of this irritating Kenny G-esque "smooth jazz" (not to be confused with actual jazz) abomination. I immediately got rid of the album and thanked my lucky stars that this wasn't really a song associated with Christmas. Well, this year it's been everywhere. It was on the Bernie Mac Christmas episode, it's been on store muzak, on the radio, in restaurants, it's all over the place. And I hate it. Every time whoever is doing that particular version gets to "...and caroling through the nii-ee-ight" I want to become Jewish.

That's my two cents. Any other ideas?

I recently purchased a Rio Karma...

20 gig mp3 player. I don't listen to anything but it these days. Listen to what you want, when you want to. *Note: I almost always have headphones on; Three of us at my office almost always do...*

We all got Karma's and wow, I love it.

Linky

When I went to lunch a couple of days ago with a co-worker that didn't have one, he exclaimed: "I hate this song" so I turned down my volume, and said "Yeah, glad I don't have to listen to it."

He laughed, I laughed.
ah, Karma. [Big Grin]

I like anything by Manheim Steamroller. Their arrangements are amazing.

I likke the first two Mannheim Steamroller Christmas ALbums... the third and fourth are kinda reaching for material, IMO.

George Winston's "December", while not a strictly Christmas album, has some fine holiday music.

Merry Axmas Vol. 1 is pretty neat as well, if you like fine guitar work. Steve Morse's "Joy to the World", Eric Johnson's "The First Noel", and Steve Vai's "Christmastime is Here" (from the aforementioned Vince Garauldi) are stand outs.

The worst is whatever crap they were playing on the radio last night as we tried to go look at lights... we ended up turning the radio off and just singing ourselves.

Manheim Steamroller's always been a classic here. And Weird Al's Christmas songs are excellently hilarious, IMO...

But I absolutely can't stand Madonna's version of "Santa Baby". It's the Jersey accent. Bleh. >_<

The Pogues' "Fairytale of New York" is my favourite Christmas song. Least favourite... wow there are a lot of contenders for that... maybe "Santa Claus is coming to town."

The best Christmas music is 40's and 50's swing stuff... like Ella doing "Sleigh Ride."

The worst? any parody of "The 12 Days of Christmas"
