Seems like we never get together anymore unless somebody from out of state comes by. [Frown]

Next week is pretty full for me, but who would be up for some sort of get-together, maybe between Christmas and New Year's?

Pfft! Do it before January 7th! After that, I have to go back to school. And then I go to France for a week!

I will go to Islands of Adventure with anybody who wants to go.

Stormy, I'm not inviting you to a sleepover here! I'm just talking maybe a few beers and/or whatever Chris thinks is fun (since sports are out, and so is anything pricey). Bowling maybe? A movie? Jai alai and the heck with what Chris likes? Howl at the Moon/Jellyrolls/Blazing Pianos? Karaoke? Improv?

Heck, for anything other than a theme park, I'll treat if that's the issue. (Though if we gamble, you're on your own.)

Does your schedule actually prevent you from being able to grab a meal or a movie or something?

If it'll help I'll get my Dad to write your parents a note. [Wink]

Things are in flux for me right now, Icarus. I'm going to be working two jobs as of the beginning of January. I won't know my schedule until then, but I'm going to reverse my earlier post and say that it does look I'll be able to do weekend evenings.

Have you ever played Settlers of Cataan or Starfarers of Cataan?

Posted by zgator (Member # 3833) on :

I could probably do something the weekend after New Years. Jai alai, movie, dinner, drinks, anythings fine by me. But don't anybody think their going to get lucky with me or anything.

Starfarers is a take off of it, and better, imho:

http://www.coolgames.com/mfg-cat/msp/0581-00.htm

Both games are for from 2 to 4 to 6 players.

But, like zgator, i'm open to anything that doesn't involve ritual sacrifice or karaoke. [Smile]

Rakeesh has indeed seen this thread, and I bless it in the spirit of hedonism.

Oh, and Christmas [Wink]

My weekend afternoon-to-god-awful-in-the-morning days are free, with a little notice (say a week), but I won't be able to swing anything like a day at a theme park. Expensive, that, and money's tight.

Fancying myself a fine card player after watching some World Poker Tour, I'm game for grabbing some drinks, perhaps, like we did last time I was there, and then some form of gambling. Poker night at someone's place, perhaps? Then again, a movie and late-night BS shooting at Denny's is also good fun.

So to put it plainly, with a little notice I could do something like meet somewhere Saturday night, as long as we like. Friday would be a little tougher, and I can't guarantee I'd be able to do anything before...let's say 11:00pm. (That's about when I could get to Orlando to do anything).

Please note that I don't have a problem with ritual sacrifice or casual sacrifice for that matter.

I think I could swing the Saturday, Jan. 3.

Crap, my wife just reminded me that she's going to a bridal shower that day. If it's in the afternoon, I think I could still do it, but we need to find out what time the shower is.

Joe, can you do Saturdays even after the holidays?

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

Sure. My schedule's pretty open, actually. I was just hoping to take advantage of the vacation time. But nights and weekends are fine the rest of the time as well.

^bump^ Come on guys, the Boulder people had fun. Anyone wanna try and organize this? We need to figure out a good date and some place to go/ things to do... If you all want, we can meet up at my place or something, and carpool to wherever. I know a couple good restaurants, but maybe someone who knows the area better can suggest something. Anyways, thought I'd try.

Oh, btw, I have board games, and if we have enough people, we could even do a big game of Cranium.

I could maybe do something Tuesday after work. My days off are at an end. Which sucks since most of my "days off" were scheduled far in advance leaving me with no actual days to do nothing.

How about next Saturday (1/10)?

I might have an idea for a clump gathering.

Lady of the Lake Fair

It's a medieval fair in Tavares to the NW of Orlando in late Feb. It doesn't look like a big one, but it's close to Orlando.

One of the groups in my theater arts class did Barefoot in the Park as their final. The male lead was played by this guy I had a huge crush on at the time, and now I have a soft spot for that play.

Of course, he was far too busy being madly in love with the preacher's daughter to ever notice me. (He was a senior and I was a fish)

Over the summer we started bumping into each other pretty frequently at this park I enjoyed reading in and he enjoyed walking his mom's dog in. Actually conversing with him pretty much killed the attraction. He was hot. He was also totally not my type. And still madly in love with the preacher's daughter.

We stayed glancingly in touch when he went to college. My senior year, I took him to prom. Just so I could have a date with a junior in college. And so he could say he'd been, since he'd skipped his own when that girl wouldn't go with him.

I wonder what ever happened to him.

Don't you just love it when celia shares something personal? It's always so horribly off topic and never really gives you any insight. [Smile]

Posted by zgator (Member # 3833) on :

We need more details to gain insight into the one called celia.

Did you swap spit after the prom?

Posted by celia60 (Member # 2039) on :

There was an all night party. I was hosting. I was far too busy playing hostess to have snuck off, even if I'd been interested.

There were some other complications. Like him spending a lot of the dance flirting with a bubbling blonde junior and most of the night smoking with my sister on the front porch talking about life. And me being a little interested in another guy I'd actually set up with one of my friends for that night rather than asking him, myself. (He was a bad idea. Too bad an idea to ever be worth finding out if the attraction was mutual) And that friend starting to see another guy about a week before, but still going to prom with that guy and bringing both of them to the party. And another girl being really flustered that her date had basically dropped her off and sped away because his parents were all freaky about curfew.

And a lot of twister.

And no one took pictures.

I did kiss him on the cheek and thank him for a lovely evening.

What an interesting mood I find myself in today.

Posted by zgator (Member # 3833) on :

When I was in college, I took part in one of those Twister events where they're trying to set a record for most people playing. I was disappointed to discover that the really cute coeds didn't seem to want to join the groups of geeky engineers playing.

No one got naked either. At our particular mat, that was a good thing.

I want to hear more about the renfaire - when is it? Was that really an option?

If Nathan and I could fly out, would there be someone we could stay with? OR ideas for really inexpensive (but sanitary accomodations?)

Just brainstorming . . .

Posted by lcarus (Member # 4395) on :

The one Zan is describing is a little RenFaire. The premier ones in Florida are the Florida Renaissance Festival (DANGER: Obnoxiously musical websites). Unfortunately, either one entails at least a couple of hours driving for us, which isn't so much fun with two little ones. The one in Deerfield Beach (Southernish Florida) is weekends January 31 to February 29. The one in Live Oak (North Florida) is in September. I've been to the Deerfield Beach one and it's awesome. If you don't have a big RenFaire where you are, this one may be worth traveling for. I don't honestly know if this local one is. (Though I would love to meet you . . . tell me again where you live?)

I don't have a room to offer at this time because my life is too upside-down these days, between my class, the play, the girls, the dogs, etc etc etc. However, the Orlando area is cheap hotel central. [Smile]

Icarus is right. The one I mentioned is pretty small, but it's close to home for us CFer's. There's another one in Gainesville that's much bigger, but that's about 2 or 2.5 hours away. Thus far, Ryan seems capable of about 1.5 hours or so before he's over the car ride thing.

I've never been to the one down south, but I've been to the one at the Ringling grounds in Sarasota many times. That's where I bought my first sword. It's a shame they don't do that one anymore.

Icarus, change the title again so Storm will get off his tuckus and let us know if the one in Lady Lake is any good.

I'm on the west coast, Icarus - September - is that hot and muggy or just hot?

Posted by lcarus (Member # 4395) on :

We don't do hot without the muggy. After hundreds of years of cross-breeding senior citizens and immigrants, we've developed the genetic ability to navigate based on humidity. Take the moisture away and we would all plunge straight into the ocean.

So Chris posts in this thread but still fails to mention whether a RenFaire would be of interest to him . . . [Grumble] . . . it's not like I propositioned his wife when we last met or anything!

A Ren Fair would be something I would very much enjoy going to. The last one I went to was in Tempe, AZ. about ten years a go? So, I haven't been to the one in Lady Lake, or any at all in Florida, in fact.

The problem is that I may or may not be able to afford to go, depending on the time that everyone goes to it. Yes, I am just that broke. And, no, I don't want someone to pay for me.

Decide amongst yourselves what date would be good and if I can go, I will let you know.

Thanks for keeping me in mind, though, and bringing the thread to my attention again. [Smile]

Posted by zgator (Member # 3833) on :

Here's the link again if you missed it.

The date would be 2/21(Sat.) or 2/22(Sun.) and tickets are $10.

You have to go Storm. Do you have any idea what that will do for your fellow CF Hatrackers' notoriety. Forget meeting celebrities like Ralphie or TomD. We would be the only ones that could say we've met the one and only Storm Saxon.

And where's Rakeesh? I know it's a bit of a drive for him, but that would be great if he could come to.

I have a friend (Nathan's godmother) that lives in N. Carolina - it would be neat to visit her and you and whomever else and September would give me a goal and something to plan/save (emphasis on save) for!

By the way, folks, don't click on the link to Expedia for directions to the Fair. They are WRONG. Expedia can't figure out where Howey-In-The-Hills is, so it sends you to Sanford instead. I sent them an e-mail about this (their own site linking you to wrong directions!!!) but I don't know if they've done anything about it or not. Instead, cut and paste their address into MapQuest. While MapQuest is frequently mistaken as well, at least they know where Tavares is.

Now, comparing MapQuest directions to Expedia directions from my own house, the MapQuest ones are better . . . they are more detailed and aware of streets near my house. The Expedia directions are (now) intelligible, but they incorrectly have me starting from Old Lake Wilson to US-192, when Old Lake Wilson does not run from my home to US-192.

Oh man! I love RenFaires and I'm actually going to be in Florida this weekend!

However...
I'm going to be on a school trip to Disney and we're not allowed to leave the park.

If anyone feels like coming to hear me (and a ton of other kids from my highschool) sing on Saturday we'll be in Epcot at 5:15pm on the Future World Stage...

Dragon, do you get to spend all day at the park before you sing. My sister got to do that a few times while she was in high school.

Anyhoo, my pass for Disney has expired and I've moved on to a pass at Universal. It will be a while before I make it back to Disney.

Jeff, if you come on Saturday, I'll let you experience the joys of children by changing Ryan's diaper. You know you can't pass that up.

yeah, we're getting there Thrusday morning and leaving EARLY Monday morning. Should be fun.

Is it warm?

That depends.

To me, it's pretty chilly outside. I guess it's in the upper 50's or low 60's right now. It should be in the low 70's this weekend.

eh, that'll do. It's better than mid thirties.

By the way - is this a bring-the-kids thing, or should we stick to adults?

What time? Where do we meet? Cellphone coordination or a specific place?

We should use cell phones to coordinate. I'll e-mail mine out tonight if I get a chance.

A Renaissance Festival seems like a pretty child-friendly event to me. I was planning on bringing my kids, unless that's a problem. If we're not, then I have to scramble for babysitting, and that might put a crimp on things. Actually, I was planning on bringing Grandpa as well. [Smile]

We should do an adult get-together sometime. Didn't somebody say that they didn't drink? Chris, was that you? Not that drinking is the only possible adult get-together. We could all go see an R-Rated movie or something some time. (But I do remember that Chris doesn't like sports. The rest of us might want to think about going to another Predator game sometime. Or Jai-Alai.)

Not that we need to do something "adult" to do something without kids, but babysitting is such a hassle to get that I have a hard time justifying it to myself and then going to say, the zoo. Anyway, my kids are pretty good . . . at least, nobody in this group has any evidence otherwise--I think. [Angst]

Actually, we should use both cell phones and a specific meeting place, in case reception in bad out there.

No worries, just windering how I was going to explain to the boys I was going to a RenFaire and they had to stay home, nyah nyah...

For future reference: I don't drink, but it doesn't bother me in the slightest if others do, just as it doesn't bother me if other people eat broccoli in my presence (shudder). I just have no taste for it and no bodily tolerance at all, so there's not much point in taking it up.

I pretty much have to bring my kid. I suppose I could leave him in the car. It's suppose to be a nice day and I could crack the window, but some people get uptight about that.

I'll send out my cell phone number. I can't find a map of the grounds, so the only place I could think to meet would be the entrance. The faire starts at 10 and we should be there by then or soon after.
