Would anyone be interested in a hatrack gift exchange, where we all put in our names, get someone else's secretly, and mail them a gift?

If so, speak up!

This is a great idea! *signs up*

Alas, I am too broke to do something like this, even though it sounds like tons o' fun.

Posted by Kasie H (Member # 2120) on :

I want to! Sign me up.

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Ok - here's how I'll work it.

If you want to participate, send your name (hatrack name too please) and mailing address to me at annekemajors@yahoo.com

I will have my roommate draw names and email info back, so it's totally anonymous.

The deadline for me to get your address is Monday, December 8.

Posted by Mrs.M (Member # 2943) on :

I'm in and I sent my email with my info.

Are we putting a spending limit on this?

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

For reasons of wanting to be sure the exchange works out, we should put some sort of minimum on either the number of posts or time since registration, or some combination (not anything terribly onerous, I was thinking 100 posts OR a registration more than one month ago).

Also, I think a "suggested expenditure" would be appropriate.

And perhaps people participating in the exchange should also email in or post some interests.

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

Maybe when you sign up you can indicate your contribution level. Me, I've got lots of used books I can unload. Also, if you're psycho like me and don't want a male to be given your address. Though I think the time/post number limit might be good for that.

Posted by Mrs.M (Member # 2943) on :

Also, we should indicate which holiday we're celebrating - Chanukkah, Christmas, or other.

Posted by Ela (Member # 1365) on :

This sounds like a fun idea, but I agree that there should be some spending limit. A minimum and maximum spending limit should be made, so people won't spend too little or too much.

Very cool [Smile] ...too bad I don't live in America.

Posted by MoonRabbit (Member # 3652) on :

Why don't we do this:

1. Anyone who wants to participate sends a gift to Annie.

2. She keeps the one she wants.

3. She sends each participant a random gift.

Nobody has to know anyone's address, and by her choice of who gets what gift, we all get to learn exactly what Annie thinks of each of us.

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 433) on :

Yah, but then Annie has to pay to ship out each one again. [Razz]

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

OK, more rules:

if you request that a male not be given your address, I will make sure it happens.

Limit of 100 posts and one month registration.

Specify your holiday of choice [Smile]

You can all send me presents if you like, but it's not neccessary. [Smile]

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

I swear Annie, if you give out my address to a male I will... I.... UGH!!! ::scowl::

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

whatever holiday strikes whomever's gets me fancy.

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

Also, I suggest you ensure people from the same town do not get each other, likewise people who may be otherwise closely entangled.

Also, I know an excellent way to drum up membership. Get Kama on the list [Wink] . Since she's so far away, she can only send lightweight things cheaply. Like pictures [Smile] .

Ooh, I am totally in!! [Monkeys]

*goes off to send e-mail to Annie*

would $10-20 be a good range?

I'm too broke. [Frown] And I'd rather save up so I can meet people sooner. [Smile]

Posted by MoonRabbit (Member # 3652) on :

So, Annie, get an anonymous P.O. Box and I'll send a gift plus shipping. I'd like to give rather than receive, so someone who can't afford to participate can still get a gift.(I'm too old and have too much stuff already)

Having made a few bucks selling really weird stuff on eBay, I could come up with something that would be unique for a dorm room, etc.

Authentic "Oregonians for Nixon/Agnew" bumper sticker, anyone?

I'm all up in that piece. I'd even be willing to send an extra gift to someone who can't afford to return the favor. I suggest we get this train moving though, since packages have to be sent pretty early this time of year if they're ever going to arrive.

Posted by larisse (Member # 2221) on :

This may have been mentioned already, and I just conventiently overlooked it, but how about also included the top three interests of the person. I think this would help in the purchasing or making of the gift(s). Once the drawings have been made and the pairs matched, Annie could include the interests, along with name, to the respective Secret Santa.

Posted by Ryuko (Member # 5125) on :

Ooo, that's a genius idea larisse. I think that should be part of the roolz.

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

And yes, include your interests if you will. Or not, if you like surprises. [Smile]

Posted by Dragon (Member # 3670) on :

Technically one could look in someone's profile for their interests...

Posted by Carrie (Member # 394) on :

Well, crap, I sent off before I found about this "interest" thing... I do like surprises, but I also love movies. I think surprises wins, though, so pretend you all didn't see that movie thing [Smile]

I'd love to participate but I already have way to much stuff. Are ther any who would be willing to contribute $10 - $20 dollars to a pool that we could donate to some worthy cause (Maybe a homeless shelter or food bank) in the name of Hatrack River?

Last night I was watching a Secret Santa exchange, and I realized that, as difficult a time as I have getting gifts for people, I still want to do this.

Just whoever gets me, be aware that it'll be a while before I'm actually back at the address I'm giving you (because I'd really rather not have to explain to my parents that I'm giving their address to internet-people). So if I'm not thanking you or anything, it's just that I haven't gotten home yet. [Smile]

Also, can everyone who doesn't have interests listed in their profile please add them or post them here? I am not sure what to get my person b/c they haven't listed any there. I've been trying to go over their threads and posts to no avail.

I will, of course, love and cherish anything my Secret Santa sends me. But if he or she is needs some specific ideas, here you go:

Heh. My interests are currently listed as "miscellany." [Smile] ...but they include:

Books. Mmmmmmmmmm, books. <drool>
Music, but only good music [Wink]

Things to know about me:

I use a Mac.
I don't have a VCR.
I'm Canadian.

That would make me wonder who you gave the other sock to.

Would also make me wonder when it was cleaned last.

My wants:

1) Your favorite music. (Cassette, cd, mps, what ever format)
2) A good book that I havn't mentioned.
3) Puzzles or magic tricks (not that kind of trick Ralphie. for shame on you.)

ooh - if you do get a Bob Ross master paint set, can I have it? [Smile] Anything with Bob's face on it would be great, actually.

Things that make noise
Brightly colored things
Things in French
Mexican groceries
Pictures of Germanic children

If I get a Bob Ross Master Paint Set, I'm keeping it. I have a wall in my living room that needs a certain look of a picture, and I can't find it anywhere. I'm starting to realize I may have to paint them.

Which is fine, except I paint slowly. And layerly. And more slowly.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Sadly, I couldn't if I wanted to. I did finally break down and bought one in order to watch The West Wing first season on DVD, but it's not hooked up to anything because there's no room in my living room.

No internet at home, either. It's like living in a cave. When I'm home, I play music and wear out my cell phone.

Here's some ideas for me and Zemra. We're keen on just about anything. If you know a movie, an album or a book that we just must have, send it. If you see something at the local thrift store that is cool and unique, send it. If you have a $1 print of a funky and interesting painting, send it. Our tastes are eclectic, and something unique and interesting, something that we never would have come across without having it sent from you, that's just what we're jonesing for.

By the way, if you do have a movie or an album that you think we must have but you're not sure if we have it already, here's a list of our combined movie and music collections:

movies
music

They're in excell spreadsheets. If you need a different format, just say the word.

Looking forward to the gift exchange. [Smile]

Random stuff appeals to me. Actually, I like that about this whole exchange. Whatever I get will be interesting... (whereas a lot of times when family gets me a present that I'm not at all interested in I can get annoyed -- "they should know me well enough to know that I wouldn't like THAT!" -- but with someone I don't know there's no expectations and it'll just be fun to see whatever shows up...)
