Actually $1,036,000. [Eek!] That's what a jury just awarded my former boss. Her position was eliminated as part of a round of budget cuts, and filed a lawsuit for "issues related to the layoff". I wasn't privy to the details, but rumor and innuendo around the water cooler was that she was alleging some sort of conspiracy.

She was a non-union employee in an "at will" position. [Confused]

Another example of fiscal responsibility among government employees. [Wall Bash]

Courts consistently rule that those in positions of leadership are not 'at-will' employees. If you make someone a 'boss' you've made a contract with that person, and you can't let them go unless you have a good reason.

On the other hand, layoffs usually constitute a good reason. I don't have my employment law book with me right now, but I'm pretty sure that if a company needs to lay people off, and jumps through the proper hoops (either giving 90 days warning, or paying employees for ninety days of work) then they can pretty much lay off whoever they want.

Although, if you put a sad case like this in front of a jury, they'll always give an award to the person bullied by the company.

Wow.

How long would it have taken her to make a million bucks just working for them? That looks like a little more than 90 days pay to me!!
