Here is the story abou a bunch of illegal immigrants getting arrested. They were released if they had no criminal record, which is definitely good. I am wondering what prompted this. While US immigration laws are fairly strict clearly there are many violations. I personally think that it is almost universally beneficial for immigration officails to turn a blind eye to this sort of thing- the illegal immigrants get a shot at the American dream via hard work to earn a living while many, many industries (restaurants, cleaning, agriculture) benefit from inexpensive labor.

while i'm all for offering the american dream to anyone who wants it, i think "turning a blind eye" to working illegal immigrants is not the best idea for one reason -- there are plenty of american citizens who need a job. i can't back myself up with facts and figures, but i think it's a valid point anyway.
