I’m going to be at a seminar in Claremont November 5th & 6th. I’m flying into Santa Barbara late on the 3rd (Monday), might be able to hang out on Tuesday or Wednesday evening. I think we get out around 4 on Wednesday, but I don’t know if I’ll be staying in Claremont or returning to Santa Barbara for the night. Given all the uncertainty, does anyone want to try to meet for coffee or something on one of those days?

*Checks weather*
When it rains, I don't go out.

If you'd like to stop here when you pass through, it'd be great (you're within a couple miles of our house as you traverse down the 101), but that close to Mama's due-date means no major travel. But hwo knows -- you might be the first Hatracker with the opportunity to meet the newest Hatracker! Keep contact as it gets closer, ok?

We have a Claremont too, you know! Right here in Orange County! Seriously! So why don't you come here instead? [Big Grin]

I was hoping that the newest Moose would hold off and be born on my birthday, but early enough for me to meet him (it is a him, right?) would be even better. If it won’t be an inconvenience to you, I’ll try to talk Petra into stopping by to say hi on our way past.

Icarus – are there any exciting continuing education opportunities in your Claremont?

Um, there's Lake Sumter Community College!

O_o

I may very well end up in being Claremont the morning of the 6th, actually. In theory, I'm supposed to be taking the actuary test that morning in Downtown, but last time they pulled a switcheroo a week before, and made me go to Claremont. Since I registered at the last minute again, I was rather resigned to a repeat.

But since dkw's going to be at a seminar, sounds like Thursday noonish (when the test is over) wouldn't work anyway. Besides, I'm still really hoping I really can take the test Downtown.

I really shouldn't agree to get together the night before the test. Last time I didn't get enough sleep the night before. [Frown]

But maybe Tuesday. I would really like to meet dkw! If I have to drive to Santa Barbara to do it, it'd be well worth it! [Big Grin]

Well, my schedule just got a lot more open.

The seminar was canceled for low registration [Frown] But I have non-refundable, non exchangable, plane tickets, so I'm going to use them.

Since this was supposed to be continuing ed time, not vacation time, I have to find some educational things to do (maybe I'll just bring along a stack of the books I haven't gotten around to reading yet).

Aww. That's too bad. Glad you're still coming, though! [Smile]

Are you interested in anything in particular, ed-wise? [Wink] What topic was the seminar supposed to be on?

If I find something interesting in L.A., is that too far?

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

It was a preaching conference. But anything interesting in the theology/religion area would count. I don’t think LA is too far, but that would be up to my colleague/friend from Santa Barbara, since she’s the one with the car. If you do end up in Claremont on Thursday, maybe she and I could come down for the afternoon. I’d like to check out the seminary there anyway, since it’s on my top 3 list for when/if I decide to get my PhD.

Considering that Claremont is quite a drive beyond Los Angeles, I would think the drive to L.A. would be fine.

In fact I was worried dkw, if you realized how far the drive from Santa Barbara to Claremont would be. On yahoo it says 120 miles and about 2 hours, but that is assuming peachy traffic, which never happens in L.A. A more realistic expectation would probably be 3 hours. From Santa Barbara to L.A. I'd probably allow at least 2. From Santa Barbara to Oxnard, while it can take only 45 minutes, we would always allow an hour.

Moose can back me up or disagree with me on this since I really haven't driven in the area since 2000, but I used to know it pretty well. If you need someone to pick you up in Santa Barbara, I might be able to talk my little brother into it, since he goes to UCSB, which isn't far from the airport. There is also a cool perpetual motionish-rube goldberg machine at the Santa Barbara airport that has mesmerized me for hours at a time.

There are also a lot of really neat things to do in Santa Barbara. UCSB has a lovely library, and there is a nice Natural History museum and a nice Zoo too. Neither are extremely expensive. You could also check out what sort of functions UCSB is having on those days. http://www.ucsb.edu/ I don't know if you actually want to get a hotel or motel in Santa Barbara though because it may be more expensive than something further south.

Good heavens, I won't be getting a hotel or motel there!! I'm staying with the friend who talked me into going to this particular conference with her in the first place. The distance was our sticking point before -- whether it was worth the 2 1/2 hour drive to avoid paying for housing by going back to her house.

Now that we don't have to worry about that, we might get really lazy and decide that LA is too far. Probably not, althought the idea of just taking a stack of books to the beach is tempting. [Wink]

With my parents in the Monterey area and my college in Claremont, I've driven through Santa Barbara on the way to Claremont many times. Two and a half hours is reasonable, but I'd allow for more like three or three and a half. More if you'll be doing any of that driving between 6AM and 10AM or 4PM and 7PM. If you're flying into Santa Barbara, you'd be looking at a round trip of no less than 5 hours, but likely 6 or 7, to get from there to Claremont and back. That's an awful lot of driving for just a day trip.

Anyway, I have to work on both of those days, so I'd be out for any daytime activities. And Santa Barbara is a little too far for a mid-week drive. But if you're going to be in the LA/Inland Empire area, I might be able to make it to an evening thing.

Ok, now I know what I'm looking for. I'll keep my ears open, and see if I can find anything.

I really would like to meet you. [Smile]

Well, dkw and friend are joining me for a Wednesday morning class. [Smile]

As for Tuesday evening . . . there might be something at my place.

dkw?

I'm here!

I spent most of last weekend arranging things so my house/office wouldn't fall apart while I was gone. I think Tuesday night is out. Rivka -- I'll call you this afternoon to figure out where we're meeting you. If I don't get you, my cell is 515-291-7599. Are you available after the class to hang out for a while, have lunch, etc?

Moose -- we can probably stop and see you and Mooselet on the way back from LA, once we know exactly what we're doing. I hope so, anyway.

I'm available tomorrow from about 8:30 until 2:00. Lunch is very doable -- there are one or two (dozen) kosher restaurants in the area. [Wink]

This afternoon should be a great time to reach me. I'm about to head out for the morning, but I'll be back noonish.

Then it's laundry and studying. Anyone who sees me online has my permission to yell at me. [Wink]

Let us know when you'll be coming back through. I hope you got my e-mail -- if not, lemme know here.

[Cry] I missed the Mooses! [Cry]

Due to a combination of tired cranky kids (not Mooslet) and erratic cellphones I didn't get to meet Mama Squirrel and see Papa and Mooselet again.

But I did have a great time with Rivka, and got to laugh at my friend , Rev. Petra, who said how much different the class we went to was than the way we do bible study -- more teaching by the rabbi, less discussion, more from the comentaries and less from the text -- and then proceeded to lead her Thursday women's bible study in exactly the same way. [ROFL] I guess it just looks different from the other side of the table. [Big Grin]

Rivka had a great time too. [Smile]

And there's usually more argu-- uh, discussion. We were just on our best behavior cuz there were guests. [Big Grin] (And because we were missing several of our more outgoing regulars.)
