How do you think our national leaders should act?

1. Do what they think is best for Americans.
2. Do what they think is best for all people, globally.
3. Do what they think is morally or ethically right.
4. Do what they think Americans want them to do.
5. Do what they think their party wants them to do.
6. Do what they think will most likely get them reelected.

I think it is always a complex juggling act of all of the things you listed. Unfortunately #6 gets disproportional priority.

If the American People aren't dumb, #6 should entail a lot of good things. Clinton's "It's the economy, stupid" slogan (or was it a mission statement?) was kind of a sell out. Then again, Bush's "I think Americans are basically good and want to do the right thing", while being optimistic, is still not really helping anyone.
