Ok Indiana and Chicago jatraqueros, we need to figure out if this is feasible.

DAYTON, OH—November 20th
Books and Company
350 East Stroop Road — 7:00 PM

CINCINNATI, OH—November 21st
Barnes & Noble
7800 Montgomery Road — 7:00 PM

The 21st is a Friday. This would be better for me and I'm guessing for most of you. It is approximately the same distance from Indianapolis to Cinci as it is to Dayton.

I could take a 1/2 day off of work and arrive at about the time the signing started. I could pick up people in Chicago and/or W. Lafayette and/or Indianapolis on the way, though it would be nice if we could meet somewhere near the freeway to expedite things. I have a 7 seat mini van though one of the seats is for me, and another would be for Steve if he wants to come on another of my crazy expeditions. We would probably want to make overnight arrangements somewhere. I'm all for something like Motel 6 getting one or two rooms and people bringing sleeping bags to crash on the floor.

Btw I hope Uncle Orson survives such a grueling tour schedule. While it will be fun for us fans it looks pretty miserable for the author.

I might be able to come. I'd need to talk my parents into it, though. Would you be willing to call them and assure them you're not a rapist or a stalker or something?

I live in Dayton and will be seeing him there on Thursday the 20th. I get off work at 5 and will be at the book store at 5:30 or so.

Yes I could call, but want to wait til plans are a bit more definite. I'm female so that might help. I'm also wondering if Celia and Hobbes are still interested.

Honestly though I really want to see OSC, if we don't get a group together I probably won't go. I have a place I could stay in Dayton but I can't really invite other people there. Also I'm not willing to take two vacation days or bank that much overtime so that I don't have to use vacation days to make it to the Dayton signing. This is why I was thinking Cinci was better.

You better believe I'm going to be there! Well if your willing to take me... please...? [Hail] [Kiss] [Big Grin]

Celia and I will both be at a concert on the 20th, so 21st is definitly better. Last time I talked to Celia about it she was all for it but we haven't discussed it in a while. I'm willing to miss just about anything except exams for this signing (Crystal City! Yah!). Friday is much better for me though, so I'm glad you would rather do it too. [Smile]

elaine, Of course all females are sweet and innocent [Big Grin]

I don't even remember whether blackwolve is male or female, but my parents had a definite double standard for me. I'm not saying it was right or fair but it existed.

Hobbesy if you are still wanting to go, then it is definitely on.

Celia, would Bill be wanting to come? And if he does would a carpool be too overwhelming?

msquared while I realize you are going to be at the Dayton signing and how convienient it is, would you want to head the hour south to Cinci to hang out with us?

Possible total so far:
AJ
Steve(?)
Hobbes
Celia
Bill(?)
blackwolve (pending parental approval)

If we include Bill and Steve we are already up to 6 so that would be a pretty full car. But if one more person is dying to go I'm sure we could squeeze them in.

Suggested ground rules (subject to negotiation)
Everyone is responsible for their own food.
The hotel bill will be divided according number of persons per houshold attending and who gets the beds if we crash in one huge room.

To make possibly objecting parents more comfortable about a mixed company sleepover, modest pajamas are mandatory. (I.e. t-shirt and flannel sleep pants or boxers would be my garments of choice)

Donations for gas will be gratefully accepted but are not obligatory.

AJ
(oh, my I'm directly involved in two Jatraquero events at once!) I guess the slumber party and the book signing are about a month apart though.

When you say resposible for our own food, I assume you mean that when we stop at a restraunt we have to pay, not that we should bring food. right? Please? The only thing that cooks food in my dorm room is a microwave and if Bill brought food (or Celia brought food from Bill) I think I'd die of envy.

While I would like to, the one in Dayton is 15 minutes from my home and I know exactly where it is.

If you guys are driving back on Saturday though, you could stop through town and we could meet for lunch or something at my house. Ask the people at Ornery, I throw a nice party. Depending on the weather I could even grill.

Actually, I'd love to go as well. I haven't talked to Tom and don't know what our schedule is like, since we're hosting Thanksgiving this year, but it sounds like fun and who can resist an OSC signing!

Edit: We'll drive if we go since it sounds like your van is full [Smile]

well do we want to add msquared to the itenerary on saturday?... I need a consensus... It would add an hour to our trip, but also give the college students a free meal :-)

And yes I mean meals if we stop to eat are on you, though if someone wishes to pack sandwiches they are welcome, which might be advisiable on the way down since non-stop is probably good to make it in time. I would just say fill up at lunch and be prepared for a late dinner after the signing.

Ok, so we'll leave on friday, sometime in the early afternoon, then drive to the signing, then spend the night in a hotel, and come home the next day?

I'm a girl, and it will help that you're a girl, it will also help that you're an engineer, and that Hobbes is going to Purdue. Is Celia an engineer? That will help more. I'm not joking, the only thing that's even making them consider it is that you're an engineer. *shrugs*

Blackwolve you will be surrounded by engineers.

Celia is as previously mentioned is getting a PhD in Mechanical engineering. She's doing biomedical cancer research that is cool stuff.

Her husband Bill is a computer programmer, I can't remmber whether his degree is in Computer Science or Computer engineering but close enough.

I'm a Chemical Engineer working in the Materials Lab for a company called John Crane. www.johncrane.com

Steve, my bf, if he comes, is a Civil (or uncivil as the case may be he has a bit of a sarcastic streak) Engineeer.

and Hobbes is an engineering student at Purdue.

What more could they want

[Wink]

Go ahead and e-mail me at work (aisbell@johncrane.com) with your contact info. I want to wait until we actually hear from Celia on this thread (where the heck is she?!) before we get too carried away and I actually call them though. I'm also tentatively volunteering her to talk to them too. She might have more tact than I, though everybody knows that engineers don't have a lot of tact to begin with!

yes! i am so in! Bill isn't up for this as he isn't a big OSC fan. woo! i've never been to one of these before.

woo!

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

I definitely think we need to go out for food and/or icecream after the signing!

Removing Bill from the list brings us back down to 5. Steve is an OSC fan, but I don't know yet how he's going to react. When I brought it up a couple months ago he was ok with the idea though.

This means blacwolve if you want to bring a friend or chaperone along we do have room.

I still think it would be a good idea for Tom and Christy to bring their own vehicle, partly because I think it will be more direct than stopping at my place and I may be leaving straight from work.

I'm wondering if Tom and Christy would like to stay in the same motel as us. (I'm all about motel 6 or super 8).

What sort of logistical arrangements on the sleeping situation would make everyone most comfortable. It might be feasible to do 2 hotel rooms and split it guys (Tom Steve and Hobbes) and girls (Celia, Christy, myself and blacwolve). On the other hand if Tom and Christy want their own hotel room, then I can't see shelling out the extra dough for two rooms just to do gender segregation.

Need input...

Celia would you be able to drive and leave a car or have someone drop you and Hobbes off in Lafayette near I-74? I don't know exactly how much time it would take to drive in to West Lafayette and I really should one of these days, but we need to be at the bookstore at 7pm, so I was thinking that I should try to be in Lafayette between 3-4pm so that we have time to get down there.

Does anyone know if we will need to get tickets or something from the bookstore? They mentioned that they may need them at the Portland signing.

Sometimes I'm so good I scare myself.

I just called the Barnes and Noble in Cinci. I told her that a group of fans was going to be caravaning down to see Orson Scott Card, and did we need to have tickets or anything?

She said that she is starting to hand out line numbers at 3pm, but if I called her the day before and told her how many of us were coming that she would reserve some for us ahead of time.

I thanked her profusely!

Just remember OSC stays until every one gets their books signed. You don't have to have a number, a number just gets you in earlier.

They always have numbers at Books & Co, in Dayton. Usually I am in the single digits.

I live north east of Columbus Ohio, and I can plan on meeting you there in Cincinatti. Anyone from Cleveland or Pittsburgh or Columbus want to car pool from Dover/NewPhiladelphia, Cambridge, Zanesville, or Newark? I have a somewhat reliable vehicle (92 S-10 Blazer...5 seat belts) and AAA, but not a lot of money since becoming disabled.

Add another female (industrial) engineer to the list!

I might be able to come. It will however involve a bit of a greyhound trip for me, which will take some extensive planning. Meaning that the two buses from here to Cincinnati arrive at 6:00 am and 7:40 pm. So are there any good ideas as what to I should do from 6:00 am til the signing. An alternative may be to take a bus into a city near Deadhorse and catch a ride with her to Cincinnati. I'd be willing to split gas with her if I did. Unfortunately I'm not studying to be an engineer, but biology majors are trustworthy too.

As a side note, I was disappointed to discover that OSC is coming to a town near Seattle only 40 minutes from house, and I wouldn't fly in for Thanksgiving until the next week. So I was elated to find that he'd be coming to Ohio, and I could feasibly get there even if it takes 12-24 hours to get there by bus. So [Party]

I might be able to come, depending on my schedule. I live in Lexington, so I am going to see how easy it would be to go to that one. Probably I will be able to drive up to Cinci, but if I have to work the next day I might not stay the night.

Posted by Dead_Horse (Member # 3027) on :

AJ,
I should probably head back late Friday night, unless there are so many people in the room that splitting the cost makes it incredibly cheap. I don't mind the floor, but if I sleep I use a CPAP machine that makes noise that bothers some people.(it's a little blower motor) But it does keep me from snoring like a hog.

Audeo, You could meet me anywhere between Zanesville and Columbus at a stop near I-70.

As far as I'm concerned you are on the agenda msquared. I don't know how many people will be coming with though but it is looking like at least 6.

I guess I should start looking into nearby motels. I don't know how many people we are actually allowed to cram per room without violating fire regulations.

Normally a Motel 6 doesn't cost more than $55/night so that would probably come out to around $10/person.

Doing my van-seat count again. We might need another car for some of the Indiana people. I'm going to give priority to the Chicago-area types because we have the farthest to go.

Definite
AJ
Celia
Hobbes

Chicago area possiblities
Christy
xnera
Steve? (I didn't get a chance to talk to him last night because they were having the jujitsu class in our family room)

That puts us at 6 already 7 would be tight but doable

Indiana possiblities
blacwolve
melting snowman
Raia

If you three are all friends IRL and live near each other then maybe you could do a joint carpool. It sounds like at least one of you has a car. This could possibly make objecting parents happier. We could still caravan down and all crash together in the motel room.

AJ

I think it is only fair that blacwolve has priority of the Indiana group because we have already been sending e-mails back and forth. So if there is one person to squeeze in for that 7th seat, it will be her.

ok, this all sounds good so far. how are we for cargo space? (meaning: how many books should i try to limit myself to? do you want me to through a few games in?) i can fit everything i need for an overnight trip into a backpack, but that is excluding stuff i want signed.

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

That is a good question. I think with careful packing we can fit all books in. They are flat and would fit under the seats if worse came to worse. Even with the back seat in I still have considerable cargo storage in the trunk. I would say that we should limit our personal effects other than books to small backpack/duffle bags no larger than an airline carryon. I only plan on bringing my hardbacks for him to sign, but we can find room for paperbacks too.

Also the "modest pajamas" regulation is coming from the person formerly known as The 4th Floor Dorm Nudist. So it was to remind myself as well. And to allay any fears on the part of blacwolves parents and other such unsuspecting types.

i'm hoping the two book limit thing doesn't apply as i have more than 2 things to get signed for other people.

Celia I hope to have the answers to all your questions in the next week. Especially on the "who's going" You and Hobbesy are definitely coming with me. Other than that, i'm not sure and I would aprreciate hearing from people. (Christy, xnera etc.)

Thanks, when it gets a bit closer I'm sure there will be a new thread to discuss final plans. I usually have to wait on my wife's work schedule to plan events like this and she gets it only a week in advance.

The last time i went to a OSC signing the wife lost all our film so we might be showing up at the Cincinnati location.

Edit: Correction, the Cincinnati location.

No, we're driving on our own, since it's going to be really out of your way and there will hopefully be four of us. We just want to stay with you, sharing costs of hotel rooms and all. And hang out with you, and everything else. Unless you don't want us, of course.

How many people are coming by my place on Saturday for lunch?

I'm assuming AJ's whole care is coming which should be 7 people. That's about all I know...

Sorry, only one msquared on fire experience a year. The lady who does it only posts on Ornery and I know that with her schedule she will not be able to make it.

Mark OrneryCon III on your calander now. June 19, 2004.

I suppose that since I am a member at Ornery I could go... even if I'm in uber-lurker status there, but I think I'll have other places to travel to this summer. Sorry. [Smile]

As the time draws nigh it looks like I won't be able to make it after all. Thanks to Dead Horse for the offer to drive me part of the way.

Sorry to hear that, Audeo. [Frown]

Honestly, I haven't figured out how to get the money to go, either. My truck broke down Wednesday. AAA towed it to the mechanic I like, and he fixed it Thursday, but I don't have the $115 to get it back. I hope it works out by then.

We'd like to go to lunch on Sunday, if you can handle us.

[Cry]

I just found out that a friend of the family got opera tickets for the two of us on the evening of the 21st.

I wanted to come!! And my dad hadn't agreed yet, but I had felt hopeful about it... oh well, it can't work now. *sniffs*

Have fun, all.

Well, I'll certainly be there now. Guessing it's a wee bit too late to try to get in on that group with the numbers. So I'm just trying to figure out how (and/or) if I'll be able to recognize any of you. If left to my own devices I'll probably slink in and slink out without actually talking to anyone. Anyhow, in case there's anyone trying to organize up with folks, I'll be a mid 20's ish 6 foot white guy with medium short brown hair, and medium build (like that's not a common description [Roll Eyes] ). I'll be carrying a copy of Treason in addition to my Crystal City, and I'll generally be alone. Oh, and I answer to the name Mike (which is also very uncommon, right?)

I wish I could come. The car is fixed (for the 3rd time since the beginning if this thread. But I have no money for gas and there is a church Thanksgiving dinner party tomorrow night.

Have fun, everyone, and drive carefully.

I went to the Dayton signing yesterday and I just have to say the Cards are two of the nicest people ever. I had a great time listening to OSC speak and it was also nice to meet some Hatrackers. So anyways, I was just posting to say have a greta time today! [Smile]

Happy, I told the woman 9 or 10 people to allow for leeway. So we may have a spare number available. I'm blond with slightly higher than shoulder length hair and going to be wearing a light blue turtleneck shirt.
