No, I'm talking about this bit of software from VALVe that everyone is talking about. In all the articles I've read, no one ever bothers to explain what it is, and what you do with it. Do any of you guys know?

Steam is a subscription service from Valve designed, ultimately, to deliver games on demand, via download. It's also a multiplayer matchup service.

You laugh, Geoff, but my family has been arguing for years whether or not steam and water vapor are the same. You'd think after so much time we could come to concensus, but nooooo. And people wonder why I think Hatrack is just like family....

I believe Steam also handles CD authentication for their retail games and anti-cheating technology, as well as patches and other updates to their games and any mods that are placed on Steam for distribution.
Another interesting feature is that once you've got a Steam account, you can go to anyone's PC and play Half-Life 2 by logging onto Steam. It'll download the content you need and off you go.

I haven't heard too many good things about Steam so far.
I've heard from alot of people that can't get a connection to Steam after upgrading. There are a few that have had to reinstall HL (and all patches) after upgrading due to Steam dumping all their settings.
Still, if you want to play CS online, you don't have much of a choice.
