I don't own a photo-cel phone. I thought they were the silliest thing since, well, some really silly thing.

Then I overheard a comment by a photo journalist that went, "You have a gun. I have a camera. Mine is more powerful."

There is a wonderful article that can be written about that comment, and I want to write it.

My state recently passed a Concealed Gun Law, allowing people to carry concealed weapons.

I believe that people carrying concealed camera's would have more of an impact on crime.

You walk down a dark alley and a gang comes toward you. If you have time to draw your gun and shoot them, you have time to pull your camera and shoot them.

I think.

How difficult is it to send an e-photo with one of those camera's. What is the range? How good are they in the dark?

For what I want to compare is the deterent of yelling at the gang, "I have a gun and I'm not afraid to use it." v.s. "I just sent your picture to my friend. If I am hurt, the cops will know who did it."

Man, Kayla! How do you DO that? I consider myself a "pro surfer" when it comes to internet, and I just spent the hour looking for it -- I remember the context of what it was about, and since I usually read ABCNEWS and CNN daily, I figured it had to be there, but never found it.

You pulled the rabbit out of the hat! I am VERY impressed!

(Must be because I was using "photo phone" in the search instead of "camera phone")

OK Kayla, try this and I'll be your devoted minion.

The quote that got me thinking about this was from Mr. Gordon Parks, photographer and director of the original Shaft.

He said something to the effect that, "you have a gun. I have a knife. My weapon is better." possibly in his book, "A Choice of Weapons"

However I want the exact quote. Can you find it?

(PS I heard it on a local NPR radio affiliate this morning KWMU, but their web-site is down)

quote:
"I think my 35 millimeter camera is more powerful than your 45 (gun),"
Could that be it?

quote:
The young Panther asked, "Even with these honkie cops with their guns trained on us?" Parks said, "Look, I'm in here with you. If they start firing at us, I'm going to die just like you do. You've got a 45 automatic on your lap and I've got a 35mm camera in my pocket. I think my instrument is more powerful."

Parks added, "You want your voice heard? I'm risking my life so that the world can hear it from the most powerful magazine in the world. So don't give me that horseshit!" Two weeks later, the young Panther member was killed. Three weeks later, LIFE published Parks' story and it was distributed around the world. "In the end, my weapon was more powerful," Parks said.
