I read this news on Yahoo and it got me thinking:

http://news.yahoo.com/fc?tmpl=fc&cid=34&in=tech&cat=computer_viruses_and_worms

Could the creator(s) of the virus want to expose those that visit porn sites, or punish them in some way, or was this just a quick and dirty (pun intended) way of getting the virus to as many vectors as quickly as possible?

[Dont Know]

Wow. I'm really split on this. I hate the porn sites, and McAfee has protected me from infection with Sobig, so I don't mind them coming to harm with this.

However...

With the proliferation of unsolicited porn emails, the innocent can be drawn into the attack too easily. (I hate collateral damage!)

Thanks for the link!

It's useless for exposing porn site visitors, since as soon as the first person was infected their address book was harvested for the next vectors and it grew exponentially after that. No way to control or predict.

I don't think it was aimed at anyone in particular. It was thrown at everybody, in the hopes of bringing down as many people as possible.

So the reason I didn't get hit is that I don't visit porn sites, or at least not the right ones? (And as a concession to those who did get it) Or I'm not in the e-mail address books of some people who do?

Chris, I tend to agree with you. What a clever way to start an epidemic.

Pop,

In essence, yes, you have been spared the mark! I am surprised, personally, that I did not get it, but only because I have friends in low places...

I suppose I am really paranoid, but what if a cell within the RIAA used the same sort of virus on PtP sites like Kazaa and Morpheus?

The list of those infected could label them as those who file-share, prompting the RIAA to initiate lawsuits against them. Of course, there would have to be layer upon layer of information traded from one industry to the other, but who knows?

Uh oh, my cursor is flashing spordically, I think I am being hacked! (j/k)

Maybe I need to cut down on the caffeine... [Confused]
