It seems that we've had a few trolls and wankers around here of late and I'm almost afraid that they're taking attention away from the cool newbies that have popped up.
For those of you who aren't trolls or wankers, I'm digging you. Stick around. Remain both funny and diplomatic. Make Paul happy by continuing to use the shift key. You're doing a good job to prevent "newbie" from becoming synonymous with "goober".

Actually, some of the "trolls" are going to be pretty cool additions eventually, too. They'll get a lot of abuse thrown back at them, but if they stick around long enough to have the pendulum swing and then right itself their thinking manner and spunkiness will begin adding to, instead of taking away from, Hatrack.

The funny thing is a lot of us have hung around the boards for a while, and just recently have been allowed to have screen names.
So most of us are already in place as far as rules and stuff go.
As for being a cool newbie... this probably isn't referring to me since I can't think of anything cool/useful I have posted. I guess I'm more of a "lurker."

Second, being of Irish extraction, I must insist you spell your first name correctly. Shawn is not the way it is spelled. Sean is the only acceptable way to spell it.

I believe the progression is: n00b, newbie, member, hatracker, regular, jatraquero, veteran, old-timer, TomDavidson. The term "lurker" can apply to any of the first four, depending on the rate at which one posts and moves up the ladder. Someone like Jaiden, for instance, has only since Endercon become a "regular," before which she was a lurker/member. Maethoriell, on the other hand, climbed the ladder quite quickly.
Goober is not an official title. Sorta like "belches" rather than "bells" (for those who've read Songmaster). Other titles, such as troll, are not part of the hierarchy -- rather they can remove someone from it entirely, or merely be additional information.

Coil, you haven't been a lurker unless you are (a) counting time before you registered, or (b) have had another screenname for a long time and haven't told us who you were. But there's another name other than "lurker" for people who do that....
The term "Star-farmer" (which I only recently learned) doesn't really apply here at Hatrack, since there are no stars given.

Oh, and "doofus" is also my contribution to do with as I will. Such as, "Shawn Smyres is a doofus."
I also was the first to use "doofi", the now known plural form of "doofus". To use an example, let's say there are two Shawn Smyres. The sentence would then be: "The Shawns Smyres are doofi," indicating more than one doofus.
And so on and so forth.

Yeah, I'm not even CLOSE to being the longest-sitting Hatracker, although my posting frequency has been higher. Quite a few people who still lurk and/or occasionally post here predated me on the BML forum, and a tiny number of them were even around on AOL. If John Hansen's still around and hasn't completed his transformation into a bitter old piece of humorless but rugged granite, he probably deserves the title. If you lived in LA you could listen to Danny Bonaduce every weekday from 5:30AM to 10:00AM and Sunday through Thursday from 10:00PM to midnight.

No, I don't have that many nicks.
Many of of my screen names I have posted under no more than once or twice. It's nothing particularly notable. I like to avoid giving them away mainly due to the fact that:
1) I rather not have my previous posts reflect my older, more mature self. Back then I was an immature, innocent, wide-eyed thirteen year old. Nowadays I am much more taller.
2) My next issue is a pride thing. I bet my life on it that no one will remember any of my nicks. I'm kinda like that guy at the party that no one sees, that wants to be seen, but isn't.
Here are three screen names I have posted under (edited to add because I don't want to bump a dead thread: <grin> So I was off twenty two or so posts on my second one- sue me. Huge thanks to Papa Moose for finding it again for me.):
literateur- this was my first screen name. It was made during the days when I was an aspiring writer- Ironically enough, I stopped using it because I forgot how to spell it.
o_x_1eyedpirate - sumffin like that. Honestly, I don't know what I was thinking. I stopped using it because everyone thought I was a boy (and because I forgot how to spell it).
Azile- This is probably the one where I would post sporadically yet sparingly on. I would go through a short posting purge (Yes, 10 post purge), then stop and start again every couple of months.
(a Hi note: I never forgot how it spell Azile because it's my name spelled backwards *beams* )
More than a couple of times, I have started posting with the full intention of becoming a regular- only to stop and realize that, "Dang, this is a lot of work".
This post alone took me nearly One Hour. I am a very meticulous person- a perfectionist (notice how my whole post is chopped up in neat little sections? It look purty. ). It's not surprising why my post count is so low, eh?
Really, I'm better off a lurker.

(This post is probably more for me than anyone else, but...)
It brings me joy that since I last posted on this thread (back in February when I still thought of myself as a newbie) I have definitely moved up to official Jatraquera status, at least in my mind. I have since met some other Jatraqueros in real life (T_Smith, Jon Boy, Diosmel Duda, popatr, and Hobbes ), had a landmark post, played in three games of mafia (which really helps you get noticed more), and I think the thing that has changed my view of myself as a poster most is that people have started to call me by my first name, which means that people aren't confusing me with John Hansen anymore. Most are even spelling it correctly-- JennIE not JennY. (But don't worry if you have mispelled it in the past, it brings me joy when it's spelled right, but I don't get annoyed if it's wrong.)
Anyway, thanks for making me welcome, Hatrack, and thanks for letting me indulge in this self-purposed post.

Being here a year and having more than 5,000 posts doesn't make you a vet or even welcomed with open arms. The funny thing is people are welcomed with open arms all the time, you just have to hug back. Seriously, cling on to people like nerdy little newbs. I'm a newb. I'm damned proud of it. I've also been coming out of the lurker's woodwork recently.....mainly because I've been home more with LOADS more time on my hands, heh.... anyhow....yeah. I have just over a hundred some-odd posts... I don't even look at that number anymore, heh.... most of my posts are in the hugs and lyrics threads, and an occasional few on any number of random threads. I don't mind being the 'new kid' of the group for a while... I'm actually quite used to it, heh. ^_^
