My wife recently became the custodian of the schools small fish tank-- 3feet x 2 feet x 2 feet.

The water is green, and the chemicals she was given don't help.

She has changed several gallon of the water for clean, but no change.

Any ideas for fishy noobs?

It sounds like the filter isn't working properly. Does it have a filtration system?

Try covering it with a blanket or a towel for 24 - 48 hrs. It won't hurt the fish and the lack of light should kill off the algae. You'll likely need to vacuum the gravel afterward because dead algae will settle.

If the algae is going nuts, there are too many nutrients or too much light. Killing all the existing algae will be only a temporarily solution unless the root cause is found and corrected.

More water changes may help, but it's possible your water source has high levels of phosphates which will contribute to the problem. If you can pick up some reverse osmosis or distilled water from the grocery store and use that for your water change you'll be a bit better off.

Keep feedings light, don't feed more than the fish can eat in a few minutes.

How many fish are in the tank? Also, tells us more about the filtration system in this tank.

Water changes will help with nitrates, unless there's something rotting in there or if they are overfeeding.
