Yet still claims God is on his side.

Going to a funeral protest, it was canceled by the blizzard.

I don't mind if he still thinks God is on his side. I'm just happy that God also saw fit to prevent his presence there and it would be nice to see that happen even more often. Who knows, maybe he'll see a pattern.

I think you're giving him too much credit.

I'm just glad the family didn't have to got through that, the WBC suffering is just a plus. Maybe the next storm will kill the miserable old hatemonger.

Probably, but I'd rather hope for that than his death.

I don't feel the need to hope for that either. I leave him in God's hands.

Yep, but then we started talking about the divine intervention escalating. Sorry, I'm obviously not cut out for black humour.

The Nativity Story...Snow in the Midwest kept many movie-goers at home, undermining the film’s opening, said David Tuckerman, New Line’s head of distribution..."It’s a movie made for the heartland, and [an Act of God] killed us in the heartland."

Meanwhile, Wal*Mart has announced a Christmas bonus of a 10% discount on one item for its employees...and one polo shirt for employees with over twenty years of service...in exchange for a cutback on the number of fulltime employees.

Anyone know where the Westboro Baptist Church gets its money? I'd assume from its membership, but by most accounts that's pretty much the Phelps extended family. I know if my extended family pooled all of our resources, we still couldn't afford for a dozen of us to go jet-setting across the country once or twice a year for organized protests.

And one has to presume that someone works full time for the church, so the rest of the family has to kick in that much more. Maybe it's cheaper to maintain a nationally active religious demagoguery than I suppose, but still . . .

[edit to expand acronym in order to save Farmgirl from squirming. [Wink] ]

KarlEd -- they are lawyers. And some of them have private practice, I believe.

I really hate using the WBC acronym here. I mean, I know it stands for "Westboro Baptist Church", which is their organization. But I attend "Wichita Bible Church" with also uses that acronym, and it makes me squirm everytime I see that acronym with Phelps' name. [Roll Eyes]

I wonder which is more presumptious -- to declare that God is punishing people for being gay, or to declare that God is punishing people for being gay bashers.

Well, personally I think all declarations of God's intentions are equally presumptuous. It's no more presumptuous to say "God sent this storm to punish you wicked people" than it is to say "God gave us the Bible to show us how everyone should live."

I don't really believe anyone is being punished, but I do believe in the principle of reaping what you sow. Or Karma, if you prefer.

He sows hate, and he will reap hatred. I think that is nothing more than the world as it should be. *shrug*

Don't really see what it has to do with the weather, though there is irony in his claim that Katrina was an act of God, but the blizzard that stood in his was is not.

I see WBC, and think of White Blood Cells. And I have to wonder why they would need any financing. Can't they just take a loan from the blood bank?

Surely it's more presumptuous to say something concerning God that comes only from you than to say something concerning God which has additional evidence/support (such as the Bible)?

I know that you don't accept any of the evidence that the Bible comes from God, but surely accepting that evidence is less presumptuous than coming up with stuff on your own?

Psssh come on folks, people have been playing lawn chair announcer to acts of God for years. I doubt anybody seriously presumed to KNOW that any God sent that blizzard specifically for WBC's sake.

Though as a God fearing man, it is my belief they were most certainly considered in the equation.

I think everyone here is just happy that those fools were stopped in a manner that transcends human control. Its alot more FUN to think God via a blizzard stopped them. If human means stopped them there is just too much room for error and a possible law suit and thats just obnoxious.

Actually, I believe that accepting that "evidence" is more often laziness than anything else. There are, perhaps many people - some of whom perhaps even post on this board - who have a detailed enough knowledge of the origins of the Bible to actually have an informed opinion on any supposed "evidence" that it actually "comes from God", but most people I've encountered don't even care about "evidence", preferring to take things on "faith".

And, quite frankly, when it comes to matters of faith, I find it much less presumptuous to go with what "God" tells you than to presume the veracity of a book of extremely questionable provenance.
