So my girlfriend has come over to visit for Christmas; but it turns out her sleeping bag is a bit thin for sleeping on the floor. So we trawled craigslist and found a free mattress! We drove through San Francisco at rush hour with a mattress on top of my car. Very carefully. Especially when we had that cop just ahead of us. But we got it home without accidents. Go us!
Unfortunately, it stinks of cigarette smoke.

Unless you have birds. Febreze is NOT recommended for use in households with pet birds. It kills them. Even if used in another room.

Um, I was actually wondering the same thing.
Honest.
So I've killed 5 in the last few days, three in the kitchen, and I tell Fahim, and he doesn't say anything. I tell him there's at least one more in there - I saw it plus the gecko poop it left behind on my otherwise clean counter, and he laughs. There were at least 15 to start with! he says. Oh great. So now, if I'm lucky, I'm down to a dozen.
You know, I get that they kill bugs - cockroaches and whatnot. I get that.
But I really don't need a dozen of the blasted things in my kitchen alone! I really don't! One or two would be sufficient for keeping the bug population at bay!

Nope, Febreeze does not affect geckos. I use it now and then around the cat box, and I have not noticed a decrease in geckos. But I heart geckos and would be very sad if I inadvertently killed one. They're my friends because they eat the cockroaches.

Besides, geckos are lucky. I love to hear them call to each other. It's very comforting. I'll live with a bit of gecko poop in my kitchen and bathroom.

I used Febreze and lots of outside air to de-smoke a secondhand mattress once. It took a while. But I nearly gagged on the Febreze--I hope they've changed the fragrance since it first came out. And I didn't have a single gecko in my place after that. Well, they weren't there before, come to think of it.

Except that here, it's not A BIT. It's A LOT. That's why I'm annoyed. Maui babe, I understand what you're saying, really, I do. But pound for pound, I think those geckos have us outnumbered.

Wow, I didn't know that about Febreze either. That might explain the untimely demise of a pair of keets...

My boyfriend has a lot more geckos in his apartment than I do (he lives in Honolulu)... he can't use one particular cupboard in his kitchen, because there is always so much gecko stuff in it. But I'd still rather clean up gecko poop and cockroach parts than have live cockroaches in my home. When I lived in San Diego many moons ago, I had roaches nesting in nearly every room in my house. Since I've lived in Hawaii, I've seen plenty roaches, but never a nest. I'm convinced it's because of the geckos. But if you have as many geckos as Eric has in his kitchen, I can understand being tired of that, I guess.

What you want, actually, is atmosklear. It works way better than febreeze, and does not stink. I have no idea how it works, but it neutralizes smells better than anything I have ever encountered.

I can second that recommendation. It took multiple treatments, but Atmosklear was way more effective than Febreeze at "de-cigarette-smoke-izing" my secondhand mattress.

I'm getting a new mattress and box springs for Christmas. I'm so excited.
I've been married now for 14 years and we've had the same mattress set our entire marriage, it was one of our first purchases as a married couple. It's ready to go away.
I can appreciate the great deal of finding a second hand one, but I'm just going to go ahead and get a new one. I figure buying one set every 14 years isn't going to bankrupt me.
