Whenever I'm in an elevator, I think about what I'd do for three hours or so if I got stuck and they had to call the company to fix it. I usually have three or ten hours of things to do in my backpack, just because. Though I don't usually have any food. And if I run out of things to do, I could always do my homework. (nods)

I'm not saying anything against political threads or the nature of posts to get sidetracked -- as this one will surely be -- but I do disagree with the hypocrisy of demanding civility from a member when he's being slammed himself for no reason.

I saw one report on the news where he did get a hold of people on the emergency phone or speaker in the elevator but that they couldn’t understand him.
I don’t mind being harassed, just means they like me!

Here's what I don't get about this... HOW could someone be stuck in an elevator for FOUR days? I know that elevators are required to have emergency call systems. Even if they were nonfunctional for some reason, wouldn't the building have some kind of monitoring system to see where each of their elevators were located at any time? I've never seen a building that didn't have either thos dial things over the doors at the lobby level or a control panel nearby.
And Jay posts that the guy WAS able to call for help but that security (or whoever) couldn't understand him. If the delivery guy called on the emergency phones, that should have been an immediate alert that there was an elevator problem, even if security couldn't speak his language.
There just seems to be something very odd about this one and I'm not completely sure I buy it. Can we say April Fool's?

I think the language barrier had lots to do with it. They might have heard him, but didn't realize what he was saying was "help!" so maybe they thought he was working on the elevator or something...

If the poor deliveryman was stuck in an elevator for four days, it would have been best for him to be delivering porta-potties.

Were this me, say, in a different country, the language barrier would not have been a problem. Screaming into the emergency phone every ten minutes would, I think, get the point across...

They were actually searching for him in the building too. The police were going door to door asking people if they'd seen him, they had search dogs in a local park, and sent scuba divers to check out a reservoir nearby. The call box and camera in the elevator were working, and the security guards were monitoring it constantly. They said that there was a blind spot if he was sitting directly under the camera.
The elevator was an express elevator that didn't have stops between the 2nd and 32nd floor, and he was stuck between the 3rd and 4th floor. To make matters worse, a building maintenance guy had actually gone into the elevator control room, noticed it wasn't working, and shut the power off...while the guy was inside.
Apparently they thought he was just pulling a prank when he called on the phone. Also the New York Times says that he was only stuck 3 days (still pretty bad though), and he'd just finished delivery on the 36th floor, and was headed back down to the lobby when the elevator broke.
edit to add: He said that he was screaming the whole time. He kept track of the days by listening to the other elevator in the buildings. He said they ran more during the day time. The building has 12 elevators, and a history of problems. I think that they've been or were fined $2100 in the past for elevator malfunctions, and not having adequate fire escapes or something. They found him, after he had pressed the emergency alarm (it wasn't clear if he'd not pressed it before, or if they just hadn't paid attention when he pressed it before).
