I just finished filming a short clip that will be used for our year end banquet and am in the season wrap up kind of mood so I thought I'd share with you all what I've been doing all winter which also explains why I've been absent from Hatrack the past few months.

I just wrapped up my first season as head wrestling coach at our local high school. I am a wrestler through and through and loved getting back on the mat.

For those of you that think wrestling is big steriod popping morons running around a ring check out this site about the new pro league which begins airing March 27 on PAX TV.

So anyways, it was an awesome experience and I'm already excited about next season. We began the year knowing this was going to be a building year. Last year's team only had 3 participants and it takes 14 to fill a full varsity roster. My first big step was getting kids out and we ended the season with 9 kids on the roster, 7 of which competed in the sectional tourney (the first leg of our state tourney). So right of the bat I'm excited that I've trippled attendace.

We were very young having 8 of our 9 wrestlers being first year guys but by the end of the season I was very proud of my kids. We are going to have a very strong group that returns plus about 10 kids from the middle school program coming in.

Some of the highlights included having our 135 pounder win our home tourney. Winning a weight class at our tourney is something that has not happened in over 10 years so that was cool.

We had a young man get ejected for bitting another kid, while this was very upsetting and really ticked myself and my assistant coach off we still laugh about it and ask him if he ate before the matches now.

I was sent to the hospital with a concusion and fractured cheek bone. I took a knee from one of the kids during practice. What really sucks is that he is a freshman so I have three more years of listening to him ask if I want him to "even me out" All part of the fun adn a good story to tell, so I'm not that concerned about it, although the right side of my face is still numb from the nerve damage... [Frown]

We didn't have anyone go very far in the state tourney, in fact no one made it through sectionals but again, I'm very optomistic about the future and next November can't get here soon enough.

So anyways it's been a fun year and I only wish everyone could be involved with something they love as much as I love doing this.

No, I'm not related to the Coach Inglis you've heard of. I've heard the name too but I can't remember where he is form. I coach at a high school in Ohio. I'm just an avarage Joe trying to spark life into a program that was on the brink of death.
