For each link that is redirected through TinyURL, Tin Foil Hat finds out what the real destination is and makes the link display that information in a tooltip. Note that this is all done without contacting the real destination server.

I've not tried this. Seems there are people here who may be interested.

Can people who post TinyURL links at least tell us in their message where they link to, so that we can decide whether they're worth clicking?

Why use TinyURL at all on hatrack? Putting custom text in the URL tag takes care of the main issue without getting a third party involved.

On the bright side, people have been relatively respectful about it. Certainly no one has done the slashdot thing of posting a link to tubgirl or goatse, which is a very good thing.

Because it doesn't work for all URLs.

Some links aren't allowed, such as links with URL encoded characters in them (such as parentheses). I've had problems in the past posting links to Wikipedia articles, for instance.

The only case in which it would be appropriate is when the destination page is a joke, and you don't want people checking out the URL beforehand.

Euripedes -- if you had read Dagonee's or Nighthawk's posts in this thread, you would know that that isn't the case.

I did read them. To correct my post, I should have preceded it with 'Apart from when normal URLs break', or said 'The only non-technical reason...'

Sorry.
