Tonight we watched two specials about tsunami and mega-tsunami. The former are caused by earthquakes and have been measured at heights of just over 3 meters. The latter...well, this is where more impending doom comes in.
The latter are tsunami of Deep Impact proportions, caused by massive landslides into the ocean. One was witnessed in a bay in Alaska and the wave reached up to some crazy height...over 400 meters I believe.
So, the impending doom is one of the Canary Islands, off the coast of North Africa called La Palma. The volcano and the water inside are basically splitting the mountain down the middle. During one of the future eruptions, scientists are sure that half a trillion tons of rock will slide into the ocean, creating one of these mega tsunami. The East Coast of the United States is supposed to be where it lands, totally obliterating everything as far as 12 miles inland.
So watch the news you folks. You'll have about 8 hours after it happens. Makes me want to never visit anywhere ever again.

Yeah, but it carries less of a liklihood of happening anytime soon than of California splitting off from the continental US anytime soon.

Oh well, It's Michigan, we love ice and snow. Knowing Michigan weather I wouldn't be surprised if that happened next week. I remember when I saw Day After Tomorrow I was like "Finally we get something!" I was sick of being left out. The only thing we're really worried about is being invaded by Canada, but that's more of a joke than a worry.

Ha-ha! Vermont has even fewer natural disasters than Michigan!
No tornados, no hurricanes, no tsunamis, no earthquakes, no floods (at least not often, the last big one was in 1927), no volcanoes. Winter rarely brings the heaps of snow that Michigan gets. I think the deepest the snow has been around here in the last few years is 2 or 3 feet deep in unplowed/unshoveled areas.
During the cold war there was a worry that the soviets might invade through Vermont since it's the easiest place to cross the Canadian border (assuming the Reds took eastern Canada first) and drive right into Washington. The nearest other suitable land crossing is somewhere in the midwest. Well, that threat has quickly dried up.
Also, we aren't afraid of the Canadians invading us because, in the past, we've invaded them! Suprisingly, the Canadians are still sore about that. Most Americans never knew the raids happened. Posts: 903 | Registered: May 2003

There are too tornadoes in Michigan. Not as bad as in other places, but I remember having to go to the basement to avoid them quite often when I was in elementary school.
And Michigan just sucks. I got out as soon as I could, and go back as little as possible.

Yeah there are random tornadoes in MI, but they are tiny ones that almost never cause any real damage. Compared to ones in Tornado Alley, ours are like pinpricks.
And how can you not love the cold!? I LOOVE it when it gets cold. The only thing i don't like is clearing the snow off my car. Brisk cold air is wonderful though, has its own smell. And the snow makes that awesome crunching sound beneath your feet, it's the best sound in the world.

On the Impending Doom Channel here (Ontario), at least, there is going to be a special on Pompeii on the 19th (?), which is about as impending doom as you can get.
I plan to hijack the television, if I can.

we almost have enough people for a michigan con now. Where do you live, Lyrhawn?
I'm in Adrian, closer to to Toledo than anything, PsychoTriad's in GR, Telp's in detroit somewhere, and last I heard Policy(who mostly lurks) was in Lansing.

I'm in Royal Oak, just outside of Detroit. That's funny, cause three of my best friends go to school in Adrian, GR and Lansing (Sienna Heights, Aquinas and MSU).

Hmmm, depending on when I can take the leave, I could be back in Michigan. I am taking two and a half weeks in Feb off for leave. However, that is just so I don't have to go in to work. That, and I am going to Arizona to visit my grandfather who is flying down there for the month. I have a couple other times slated to take off. Sometime in the May-ish timframe, and December for my sister's wedding.
