Here's what is really disturbing. It's how Bush weakens meat restrictions. For example, cold cuts. Several people have contracted the rare listeria bacteria because of him weakening measures to test and track meat. Same with e coli. Same with salmenella. There are tests that could be used to find them, but these companies really don't want to spend the money to use them.
But, what really annoys me is what the HECK possessed people to feed cows sheep parts in the first place? There are so many things wrong with the meat industry it's not even funny. I ought to just go vegetarian -_-

I think it's really disturbing that there's no sliced ham of any kind in my fridge right now, what am I supposed to use to line my bread with, or make a quiche?

Well, Syn -- actually the industry polices itself quite well -- they can't take another hit like they did last year in the mad cow scare.
In fact, locally, there were efforts underway to test EVERY cow running through the producer, and this was pushed by the cattle raisers themselves, but got shot down at some higher levels.
To answer your question -- some feedlots in some areas (not many in the U.S.) fed "sheep parts" (as you put it) in their feed to increase the protein content of the feed. The more protein fed, the better the meat. It was to meet that demand.
U.S.A. has outlawed the use of any animal product in feedlot feed now.
