I went to a science fiction collection reference library, and like a fool, I photocopied Paycheck by Philip K. Dick, a story I could probably find lying around on the street if I looked hard enough.

But that's not the crime. After photocopying I returned home and stapled the pages together. I discovered I am missing the last page. I spent money and time and sweat and blood and tears on this and I am missing the last page! I don't know what message the Gods are sending me, but it's not a friendly one.

Anyway, the favour is, would any kind hearted soul who owns Paycheck like to...

a) Give short summary of the story from "... for safekeeping in their storage vaults?"

b) Scan it that last passage and post it somewhere.

c) Any other method.

In return you will recieve my eternal gratitude and if you have any problems you think I could help you with I will be glad to help you back. The lines I am missing are quite important to the plot, and I am not sure what they are.

I don't care if the summary is so very brief, as long as it contains the bit about the reciept and the summing-up of the ending.

Remember my Eternal Gratitude and Unending Praises.

Thank you.

EDIT: However nice the image of stabling pages together is, stapling them is better.

Teshi,
Kelly goes for her handbag and brings out the receipt. She thinks she's beaten Jennings because whatver he has, she knows that she still has the receipt. However, at this moment, the claws swoops in and takes the receipt away from her, sending it back in time so that it can then end up in Jennings pocket. Jennings says "I was wondering when he'd turn up."

He then says that he's planning to keep the Company safe and is ready to help with the revolution. Oh, and he extorts Kelly into marrying him, thus bringing him into the family thus filling the "part of the family" requirement.

Actually you know what, this isn't breaking copyright, I don't think.

quote:
Kelly gasped. She grabbed her handbag, unsnapping it. Jennings put the piece of paper, the parcel receipt, back in his pocket. "So he saw even that," he murmured. "The last of the trinkets. I wondered what it was for."
Kelly groped frantically in her purse, her face wild. She brought out a slip of paper, waving it.
"You're wrong! Here it is! It's still here." She relaxed a little. "I don't know what you have, but this is --"
In the air above them something moved. A dark space formed, a circle. The space stirred. Kelly and Rethick stared up, frozen.
From the dark circle a claw appeared, a metal claw, joined to a shimmering rod. The claw dropped, swinging in a wide arc. The claw swept the paper from Kelly's fingers. It hesitated for a second. Then it drew itself up again, disappearing with the paper, into the circle of black. Then, silently, the claw and the rod and the circle blinked out. There was nothing. Nothing at all.
"Where -- where did it go?" Kelly whispered. "The paper. What was that?"
Jennings patted his pocket. "It's safe. It's safe, right here. I wondered when he would show up. I was beginning to worry."
Rethricl and his daughter stood, shocked into silence.
"Don't look so unhappy," Jennings said. He folded his arms. "The paper's safe -- and the Company's safe. When the time comes it'll be there, strong and very glad to help out the revolution. We'll see to that, all of us, you, me and your daughter."
He glanced at Kelly, his eyes twinkling. "All three of us. And maybe by that time there'll be even more members to the family!"

Teshi,
Hey, no prob. As far as I know, I'm just me, although there are often gaps in my on-line time that I can't seem to account for and sometimes I look down and my mouse is on the left side of my keyboard. So, for all I know, I could be tons of other people as well.

---

The true mind-squirgling horror of the mouse thing only really comes through if you know that I (like all morally correct people) am right handed.
