For all the Bloomingonian Jatraqueros, do any of you play or listen to Ether Game on WFIU (NPR)?

If so, did you hear the COMPLETELY DREADFUL version of "O Canada" on it tonight? It sounded like...like...Yanni does the Canadian National Anthem. I was driving home tonight and heard it and was just...well...there are no words.

For those of you who have no clue what I'm talking about, our local NPR station has this program on Tuesday nights in which they play a series of musical excerpts (of all genres) and listeners call in and guess the title and composer and usually a bonus question. There are no prizes; it's just for the glory of the game. It's really neat, actually; there are several "regulars" that have become semi-celebrities in the Bloomington music scene.

I didn't hear it, I rarely listen to it, but last time I was in the car with a friend, he called on three or four songs it was funny. He even called allegra to tell her that he had called so she needed to switch her radio station

I hear it on the way home from work (so I NEVER call in). I play along in the car, though. I do better when they play show tunes or classical; tonight's national anthem theme was just...not...happening for me.

I know one of the constant winners quite well, Janis Starcs. Ether game is cool, but his knowledge of music trivia is scary.

I've listened to it a few times, but it always makes me feel so worthless to find out how much I DON'T know about music... when it's basically my one passion!

Though sometimes I do get the answers, and that makes me feel special. [Smile]

fugu...oh! oh! oh! Can you tell me who he is? I was thinking, because of how the name sounded, that it was a particularly famous cello professor here. Am I right?

Of course, now that I see how you're writing it, I'm in doubt...

edited because making sense is good.

Nope, completely unrelated (well, other than the love of music). Starker's not even from the same country as Starcs, or all that nearby for that matter.

Janis Starcs runs Caveat Emptor, the used bookstore on the east side of the square.

Fugu: ah! I've actually met him, as well, though I don't really know him (I've just bought books from him...one rather recently, in fact!)

And sorry, Farmgirl...my mom loves Yanni too. I just don't like the combination of a heavy beat plus orchestral sound. It's just the ultimate cheese to me.

Yeah, I've been too much of a lurker then a poster around here to attract much notice. I'm always intimidated by the huge amounts of effort that go into so many of the posts, so I feel mine pale in comparison.

Yes you are all required to come out by the campout. Read JT Stryker's "hatrack unplugged" thread for more information.

Heffaji: hilly? Hilly? Are we talking about the same place? This place is only slightly hillier than a pancake! I may be biased because of where I come from, but I wouldn't put Bloomington in the hilly category. It's not as flat as I thought it was going to be, but it still seems pretty flat to me.

Unless, of course, you meant something else by hilly...in which case, disregard this post.

Well, at home I can't even recall more then a handful of places where I need to walk uphill. Here, it's practically every 5 steps. Not that I mind too much, but my legs just aren't used to it at the beginning of the year.

Ryoko...I think it's supposed to open sometime this school year. I want to say they're aiming for Christmas time, but I could be utterly wrong. Next time I talk to my husband, I'll ask him. He's usually on top of all the retail goings-on in Bloomington.

Heffaji--where's home? I'm from Atlanta (and parts north of there), and it makes this place look plains-y.

fugu--are you at IU? or are you an actual person? [Smile] (and I can get away with saying that, because I AM at IU and therefore NOT an actual person)

I vote the shelter house we occupied most of the summer, this is at Bryan park, down the hill from the pool (don't ask me road names). If I remember correctly from my conversation with Raia, she'll be home starting the 4th, for ten days, so probably till the 13th. So how about the 8th or 9th?

I actually live in a suburb of Chicago, where the largest hill there is the one you climb to get into your car. Anyway, it would be great to meet some of you so I can finally cast away that nagging feeling that the entire board is full of 4 people and their alter-egos.

Megan -- like breyerchic said, I'll be there from the 4th to the 13th of October... (unfortunately, I couldn't plan my visit around the time of the campout, since classes will have started back up by then). The 8th or 9th might be problematic, since that's when I think about 50 million things are being planned, but if it's a problem with classes for you IU folk, then of course we'll find time! I would love to meet all of you, I can't wait!!! [Smile]

actually about half of bloomington is really hilly, a lot like brown county. But the ice glaciers stoped about half way through town so half of it is really flat.
