Hi, people. Sorry for the offtopic post but, since I'm new here, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Eduardo. I'm Brazilian, 27 and live in Rio de Janeiro. I'm a huge fan of Orson Scott Card's books, but I discovered the forum only some days ago.
I hope we can engage in many interesting discussions about Card's works and...well...everithing else, hehehe.
Sorry for the gross mispelling and grammar errors. English as a second language, you know...

Welcome to Hatrack! There is nothing inappropriate about introduction threads, and your spelling and grammar both fell well within the norms for Hatrack, so I wouldn't worry about it at all. Hope you enjoy the forum!

Wow, food talk Had an brasilean dish some time ago - don't know the name though. It was some sort of chicken stew in picante sauce, yum-yum *hungry*
Don't worry about spelling! When we talk our second language, we have certain prerogatives

I think of my second language (such as it is) as that kind of modern art where you throw paint at the walls in nearly random fashion, particularly as regards word order. It's kind of sad to think this gleeful free-for-all feeling will go away as I learn to actually speak correctly.
That said, don't worry TOO much about grammar problems. I mean, the execution process for mistakes is really nearly painless, and we send a lovely card to your family afterwards.

there we go - a foreign language, Portuguese. OK, don't do that one, yet
Second, third, fourth ... languages are fun, you can make up words, what words, entire phrases for yourself and it won't bother you. I reckon, that without rare exceptions nobody speaks my language around here

I had a student from the Czech Republic once. She was a semi-pro tennis player who looked almost exactly like Brad Pitt would have if he'd been a woman.
Do you read OSC in English, or in your native language?
I'm from the US, myself.

Read 2 books so far - Ender's game (loved it, love it and will love it) and Hart's Hope (very interesting, never read anything like that before) Both in English - I gather, why read translations when you can read the originals.
Both books were recommended by friend Must say, was reluctant to read Ender's game first - never like Sci-fi, but glad I did, was SO WORTH IT. Can't wait to lay my hand on OSC's other work.

Pozor na Ralphie. Jestli ona ma Ti rada, vsechno bude dobre, ale jestli nema Ti rada, budou bolesti a smrt vsude. Nebo neco takoveho.
Existuje hodne veci, kteri jsme diskutovali hodnekrat, nekonecne, jako homosexualita a "kdo bude hrat Ender??" - a nikdo chce o tom vic mluvit! Jestli chces o tom mluvit, nejake lide budou si stezovat, vid'?
Pat a Jon Boy maji nejake 50 jmen.
Tak, there you have a loose rendering into idiosyncratic and flawed Czech.

Crap. Babelfish doesn't translate czech; so while I can see that you translated my post I can't puzzle out what you said- at least the number 50 is highly suspect since it didn't ever appear in my post. Is czech written in cyrillic? I see a bunch of words which look like cyrillic words translated into english letters.

Samozrejme. Ja. Duh.
Mluvim cesky jako miminko. Ale budu lepsi. Doufam?
No a taky pozor na Thumping Stick u mackillian. Nema zadnou milosti.
OK. Enough of that. I'm going to take my baby Czech out for a Friday night of fun and games. *waves hi to Hatrack* I've missed you all.

Fair enough. I fear that Lissande was perverting my doctrine with her false translations, but if you can read french and spanish then you can certainly understand most of what I wrote.

Jacare, I speak pretty basic Czech (can communicate meaning but vocabulary is flawed and have funny accent), and no Portuguese (though the Spanish residing in the farthest recesses of my memory got me the gist of what you said), so my translation had emphasis on "loose" and "idiosyncratic" - I took your topics and said what I wanted. I said, in sexy-accented Czech (which isn't even Tzadik's native language, of course, since he's from Slovakia *points above* though he speaks it also):
"And now about important things:
"Watch out for Ralphie. If she likes you, it's all good, but if she doesn't like you, there'll be pain [at least I'm pretty sure bolest is pain...] and death everywhere. Or something like that.
"There are a lot of things we've discussed many times, endlessly, like homosexuality and "Who will play Ender?" - and no one wants to talk about it more! So if you want to talk about it, people will complain, ok?
"Pat and Jon Boy have like 50 names. Sometimes we know which is Pat and which is Jon Boy, but they're all so similar it's not really important.
"I don't think anyone here speaks Czech or Slovak, but we do have a Polish girl, Kama. So I guess Kama might understand me; sorry for all the mistakes."
--
That was pretty much it. I didn't put the diacritic marks on anyway; I'm too lazy to switch my keyboard over and remember where all the different keys are. And no, Czech and Slovak are both Slavic languages that use the Latin alphabet, with the aid of a few diacritic marks.
Yeah, got the general sense of your post. Lissande did not pervert it
Now, i just checked your profile - wanted to know whether you're from Brasil or else - Elkton, MD??? Man, have spend 3 summers in North East, MD late 90's. World is small

I drive through Northeast a couple of times each month on my way home from Baltimore.
Lissande- cool. Now I guess I need to translate my own post so you can see how very close your translation was:
And now for some important counsel:
Stay far away from Ralphie (Yes, even with the name "Ralphie" she is a chick) for she is very dangerous
Never argue with anything said by the reptiles of Hatrack. We are wiser than you could ever understand.
Never, and I mean NEVER even think about debating anything that has to do with homosexuality, who will play ender in the soon-to-be made movie or how many names Pat has. These things only create problems
Don't worry about the jealousy of some of the non-portuguese speakers here. The poor things don't know what it is to speak or write in a smooth and mellifluous tongue, so one should expect a certain amount of excuses.
Be good and take care not to go about making any evil rings of power, OK?

Eduardo and Tzadik, welcome ! I come from France so of course I have a good French, and I hope my English isn't too bad. I speak a little (very little ! ) German, and no Spanish or Portuguese or anything else at all.

Maybe if you changed your name to Mogochorops, everyone would start misspelling it as Megachiraps.
So, those of you from Europe, if you wanted to be understood by the majority of people in all of Europe, what one language would you need to know?

To everybody else:
I was just thanking Jacare for the advices, above. Hey, this topic has become a true babel tower, hun? Say, people...I know OSC spent some two years over here (in Brazil) when he was young. Does any of you came here to my country, even it was just on vacation?

Welcome to you both. I hardly speak English, and other languages make my head hurt, but in a good way, so I'll just keep it to an English--_WELCOME!

I've never been to Brazil, but it's on my list of countries to visit. I have friends who have taught ESL in Brazil, and a friend whose husband is Brazilian (well, his family is; he's a US citizen) though, and my wife's ex-husband spends quite a bit of time there.

I'll just chime in and say "Welcome" to Eduardo and Tzadik too!
Tzadik, does that word mean something different in Czech than it does in Hebrew? Or is it simply a name? I get a real kick out of it, anyway.
And anyone who wants electronic help with spelling should check out ieSpell. I love it. Easy to download, add-on for Internet Explorer, and really easy and quick to use. Even catches most of my typos.
