Lawsuits are more powerful then the hosts of Mordor it would seem. Is there no end in sight!?
Is 7.5% of the gross receipts standard? I don't know why but it sounds a bit much.
Besides that, was Tolkien's family contractually guaranteed money that they didn't get? Or are they just now noticing how much money they have not gotten but could have made a play for?

The article I linked to at Cinematical has a little more info. Suffice it to say, the Tolkien Trust is not asking for money that was not legally due them, they've been trying to get their share for years. It's only now, after New Line continuing to show a lack of honesty and -another- high profile set of films derived from Tolkien's works that they've decided to sue.
