A couple of years ago I read an article somewhere about a study in which mice were subjected to MRIs. During the procedure, the mice who were allowed to move around suffered some pretty nasty side effects. Unfortunately, I can't remember what those side effects were, and I can't seem to find either the study or any articles about the study online.

Are any of the medicos familiar with the study I'm talking about?

For that matter, does anyone with better google-fu than my own turn up anything when they do a search for this?

I've never heard of moving during an MRI to be harmful to the patient -- just to the quality of image that results.

This site has some pretty complete information of anything you might need to know regarding undergoing an MRI.

The only real problems are if you have metal in your body (iron primarily, but metal fillings can cause a tingly feeling). Some tattoos have iron pigments, which you might not think of. Also, remove your piercings, if any.

And sometimes contrast dye is used. Like any drug, you may be sensitive to that.

Good luck. I hope your tests go well and rule out anything serious.

I never heard of that study or part of a study. Medline might be useful, now I'm curious, so I might search there.

Thanks Tante! The page you linked to repeats the same information about the lack of side effects from MRIs as what I found when I was googling for this study. It's possible that the article that I read was actually talking about some other kind of medical imaging technology, and that my mind just popped "MRI" in because it was a procedure I was somewhat familiar with.

Happily, I'm not needing any medical tests at the moment. A coworker of mine is going to have an MRI performed on his knee later this afternoon, and when he mentioned it the article I'd read popped hazily to mind.

Yes, I'm Theca. I didn't see anything on Medline just now, but I could have easily missed it. I did see a study about rats entering mazes with and without magnetic activity and they tended to avoid the magnetic areas.

Interesting about the rats.

Why did you switch names, if you don't mind my asking? I've been feeling slightly irritated that a new user had taken a name that was so close to your old one. [Smile]

My guess: she was tired of people mispronouncing it? [Wink]

I threw the old one out. Changed password and email address to gibberish, and so I can't get it back.
