``Spore'': By Electronic Arts for the PC. Will Wright, creator of ``Sim City'' and ``The Sims,'' showed off his quirky genius again with the most original title I've ever seen. In Spore, you start out controlling a single-cell creature. You eat enough of the microbes that surround you and you eventually lay an egg. You pick the characteristics of the offspring, such as a spear-like nose that can help you skewer other microbes. Thus you continuously breed your own species, rising up through the reptile, mammal and human stages. You eventually establish civilizations, planets, and carve out a swath of the galaxy itself, always in competition with other species. The other species that compete with you are created by other players. Wright says he was inspired by the 1977 film ``Powers of Ten,'' which pulls further and further away from a single spot on earth to a shot of the whole galaxy.

Nice. I heard about this one-- Wright seems to have an ability to create games that are like none ever seen before, and do it well (SimCity, The Sims...)

I read about this one a few weeks ago, and I love the concept. I like "sandbox" games, where you get to build and develop and play around but there isn't necessarily a linear plot established.

From a coding/development standpoint, Spore is taking a pretty different approach as well. All the species are created by players (as mentioned) and stored in an online database. All the animations for these creatures is figured out on the fly instead of being a mish-mash of different set animations. So if you add a fifth leg to a creature, it'll figure out how something with five legs would walk. If they manage to execute it how Wright was hyping it, the development time and costs for this sort of game would be a fraction of your typical new title.

Me wanty!
