The best books I have ever read, sorry OSC, with a story as complex as I don´t now what. And a story that only scratch the surface of the history. The great thing are that you notice just that. This is also the only book I have read that engage the reader so completly that you want to join the heroes just to help them fight their enemies. Tolkien

You might want to also try out: A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R. R. Martin.
He is not a Tolkien clone, but your description here of why you liked LotR sounds to me like some other books .

Hey, another Tolkien fan. Cool And those books are amazing, but its definately the intricacy of the history that makes them so great. There's so much of it there, and it's such a detailed and well crafted world. Its amazing.
I love Middle Earth, and Lord of the Rings.

Whenever I reread LotR the only negative is I miss that first reading experience of glimpsing that tantalising history underneath the story.
