*sings* All the world seems in tune On a spring afternoon, When we're poisoning pigeons in the park. Ev'ry Sunday you'll see My sweetheart and me, As we poison the pigeons in the park.

He also had a song called "The John Birch Society," plus one where he just listed all the elements on the Periodic Table. It ended:
And these are all the elements we've learned about at Havahd. There may be others but they haven't been discovaaahd.

I love how, every time Tom Lehrer is mentioned on Hatrack, people react as if they're surprised that other people have heard of him.

Some of my favorite Tom Lehrer songs are the ones he did for Electric Company (possibly the greatest show that ever appeared on PBS). Who could forget, for example, the L-Y song, all about adverbs? Or Silent E?
"Who can turn a can Into a cane? Who can turn a man into a mane?"

Electric Company was great. Who can forget, "Hey you guuuuuuuuuuuys!" or the Spider-Man stories where you had to read Spidey's dialog.

I ache for the touch of your lips, dear, But much more for the touch of your whips, dear. You can raise welts Like nobody else, As we dance to the Masochism Tango.
...
Your heart is hard as stone or mahogany, That's why I'm in such exquisite agony. My soul is on fire, It's aflame with desire, Which is why I perspire when we tango.
The Masochism Tango
The first and so far only time a guy made a mix tape/CD for me, this was the first song on it. I love quirky guys.

Dead puppies aren't much fun When you call them they don't come Dead puppies aren't much fun
My puppy died last fall That's him lying in the hall Dead puppies aren't much fun
You can't make them beg for food You can try - it's no good Dead puppies aren't much fun They won't roll over, they won't play ball They'll play dead, that's all Dead puppies aren't much fun
When you pick them up they sag When you walk them it's a drag Dead puppies aren't much fun Mummy isn't feeling well I think she doesn't like the smell Dead puppies aren't much fun Not much fun
The scariest thing was when I was at AggieCon and singing this to myself... half the people in the hallway joined in.

I'm definately living in the wrong generation. I don't even bother mentioning Tom Lehrer... the Marx Brothers... etc....to my generation. On my university residence form it asks "what type of music do you like?" Perhaps I should put Tom Lehrer. Have fun matching that one up.

Back in the Dark Ages, when they had these black disks called "records," my dad was listening to the brand new Tom Lehrer record with a colleague. The colleague is a devout Catholic.
The last two songs on "That Was The Year That Was" are Wernher von Braun and The Vatican Rag. After the last song, my dad was curious about his friend's reaction. Quoth he, "Now I think I know how Wernher von Braun feels."

"New Math" has not been in vogue since the 1970s. Where is this taking place? (And are you sure it's really "New Math" and not simply ill-remembered "Old Math"?)

quote: About a maid I'll sing a song, Sing rickety-tickety-tin, About a maid I'll sing a song Who didn't have her family long. Not only did she do them wrong, She did ev'ryone of them in, them in, She did ev'ryone of them in.
quote: One day when she had nothing to do, Sing rickety-tickety-tin, One day when she had nothing to do, She cut her baby brother in two, And served him up as an Irish stew, And invited the neighbors in, -bors in, Invited the neighbors in.
And when at last the police came by, Sing rickety-tickety-tin, And when at last the police came by, Her little pranks she did not deny, To do so she would have had to lie, And lying, she knew, was a sin, a sin, Lying, she knew, was a sin.

I remember Electric Company. Of course, I also thought it was on KET. It was why I put up with Mr. Rogers, after Sesame Street went off.
