Anybody here read Finding Darwin's God by Kenneth Miller? He's a Catholic and a professor of biology at Brown University.

(For anybody who went to the Darwin exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History, he was one of the speakers in the film segments, wearing an extremely brown sport jacket.) [Smile]

Anyway, in the book, Miller first refutes Creationism and ID, then goes on to refute the idea that evolution necessarily entails atheism. (Basically, he argues against both Behe and Dawkins.)

Of particular interest to me were his explanations of how ID is not only NOT science, it's also really lousy theology when you consider its full implications. (The sort of God implied by the intelligent-design advocates is either incompetent, or makes no sense.) In particular, Miller's ideas about the connection between evolution and free will resonated with my own LDS beliefs.

Do you have a url for the text of Miller's talk?

Interestingly enough, a recent article in the Desert News suggests that the Catholic church and Mormon church seem to have similar stances on evolution: http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,635177399,00.html

Catholicism and Evolution

From the online Catholic encylopedia: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05654a.htm

quote:
for Scripture does not tell us in what form the present species of plants and of animals were originally created by God.
Here's another interesting article: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05655a.htm

Mormomism and Evolution

From the Encylopedia of Mormonism: http://eyring.hplx.net/Eyring/faq/evolution/EncMormonism_Evolution.html

Official statements found here: http://eyring.hplx.net/Eyring/faq/evolution/

I don't have text for a talk -- although I know he was called to testify during the Dover incident. There may be transcripts available from that.

So, nobody has read this book?

Well, go read it! [Big Grin]
