"To the tune of the Klondike song commercial"

What would you do to meet Mr. Card? WOOOOOP!

Posted by Verily the Younger (Member # 6705) on :

I'd go to a book signing if we happened to be in the same town. Anything beyond that would be creepy, and unbecoming of me, his #72 fan.

Posted by beatnix19 (Member # 5836) on :

I'd drag my kids and wife to a signing and force them to sit still, even while crying, with myself and Mr. Card while Mrs. Card takes a picture of us. If he ever comes to Dayton again, I'll do the same thing. But more than that would just be creepy.

I actually get uncorfortable with some of the crazy fanboy stuff that is said here as it is. I mean I really like the Card family. I would definately enjoy seeing them again at a signing but the great thing about Mr Card is that he was just a nerdy kids that grew up to be a nerdy guy who just happens to write some really great books. He's pretty much just like the rest of us and if you do ever get to meet him you'll see this for yourself. He's exactly what most of us are right now but with a few more fans and a touch more writing talent, well maybe more than a touch. No need to idolize the man to weird extents or sell you kidneys to meet him. Besides if you sold your kidneys you wouldn't be able to meet the one kidney cover chrge at the door and still wouldn't get to see him. [Smile]

I'm not sure, I'd try to catch him at a book signing. When I'm at college next year I'd be willing to drive probably four hours to catch him some where, maybe six depending on homework.

On some wild chance he's in the area I'd offer to take him out to lunch. Oh man there'd be nothing more hard core then a private lunch discussing everything with Mistah Card. [Razz]

While I agree in principle Beatnix, I don't think he's just some guy who fortune smiled on and just happened to crank out continuously brilliant, and well medaled, books. Not that he's some sort of mystic Buddhist Lama who choose life over nirvana to help guide us through the turmoil of our lives, but I think it's an injustice to say that, for instance, Ender's Game "just happened", as opposed to being the work of a very gifted author.

Plus he's a pretty darn nice guy too. [Big Grin]

I am assuming that by "nerdy" you mean "dashing, witty, and devastatingly attractive despite his weight problem."

And I'm not impressed with your willingness to fail a class in order to meet me. I failed plenty of classes with no compensatory visits with authors. Do you really need an incentive?

By the way, you would be intensely bored at a lunch with me. Please recall that you ALREADY KNOW ALL MY OPINIONS ABOUT EVERYTHING! What would be left for me to say that would be remotely interesting?

Touche'. I suppose you'd also be a more interesting person to talk to just in general. Mission in Brazil (I think?), religion, family, and so on and so forth.

I'm sure you've got dozens of life lessons you're just dying to tell that aren't already written down. [Wink]

Plus I want to be able to say "Yeah, I took Card out to lunch a few weeks ago, it was pretty cool." in a laid back tone just to shock the heck out of all my friends who also love your books.

Nothing's stopping you from saying that now.

Well... of course. I've come to completely embrase my nerdiness as I've grown older. Nerdy is totally the new cool.

And by the way, I had tried to reply to hobbes post last night but my computer crapped out on me for some reason. I was in no way trying to diminish the great skill of Mr. Card's writing. I was simply making the point that he isn't all that different from the rest of us. He enjoys many of the things we all do, he talks all the same talk we do, he has a wife and kids, a career (this may be a bit cooler than most of ours but a career none the less), he's been through personal pains and joys, he is just a normal guy doing what he loves. There are a lot of people like that around here. Plus he's done a lot of this with a bunch of geeky followers begging all kind of crazy favors of him.

So anyways... my point remians. Enjoy his work, befriend him in what small ways you can, but don't be crazy about it.

I would be more than keen to rob the national bank, in order to buy 100% of the FBI's stock. I'd then demand they arrest Mr Card on behalf of his crime of... of... whatever, then send him to Israel.

Mr Card, please rob a bank for me.

I went to EnderCon in Orem, UT in 2002. That's 5667 miles from the place where I live.

To fail a class, it is not a great problem, they all are the very similar ones. [Big Grin]

I would be capable of being present at a class on the history of the pens that lasted eight hours, while I could be a few minutes with him...

Posted by DemonGarik (Member # 7793) on :

I would pay for duck tape, a lot of rope, and an unmarked black sedan, drive from my hosue to his, and then keep him prisoner until he re-wrote Ender's game, dedicating it to me instead of his son!
or not... One of the two...

I'd hop on a bus into the city that I'd never taken before, all by myself. Even if the bus smelled like vomit. I would ride that bus for an hour and twenty minutes until it dropped me off in a place in the city that was dark and scary. I would use the map I printed off of mapquest to find the bookstore, even though at this point I didn't feel so good. And then I would climb go up five stories and sit in a stifling hot room for two hours to listen to OSC speak.
And I'd do it again. [Taunt]

To meet OSC I'd give up my collection of OSC books. And that is saying a LOT, actually its saying far too much, I dont think I could do it, yes, yes Im going to keep the books and every time I read them it will almost be like Im meeting the man himself anyway.

Phew im glad i wansnt taken up on THAT offer.

I own a frozen custard shop just outside of Washington DC only a few miles from where he customarily signs books in Arlington. My secret wish is that he will be lured by the promise of thick malts, sundaes and exotic sorbets. He looks like he could be lured by such.

He would come in around closing and sit in the corner with his wife and friends and I would recognize him and tell him how great his short story "Fat Farm" is.This is all I want.

He is right that we know much about what he thinks. Maybe I want to tell him about what I think about what he thinks?

One of his charms is his abundance in general. That stuff about still waters running deep is nonsense. He is more like class 7 whitewater washing over us.

That actually seems rather stalker-ish. Bu-t what would I do? Humm.... Perhaps go to a book signing, perhaps start up aconversation afterwards.. I dunno if that is allowed, or if he ever gets out this far (Arizona), but that would be friggin awesome!

I'd drive 5 hours with my husband and two children, one of whom was in a body cast at the time. [Smile]

Oh, wait...that was to meet Ralphie. OSC managed to get in there somewhere too.

I took my children out of school at noon and drove 3 hours to meet him in 1994 (maybe??? It could have been '95). But we got to eat at Fuddruckers, so it was good.

I couldn't do that now, because I CAN'T drive for 3 hours on this rock, but I'd drive around to Lahaina or Hana, or maybe even fly to Honolulu, if I had other business over there.

I've decided to become a celebrated author and win a Hugo or two so I can collaborate with OSC on a new book.

With his name on top, of course. I'm not that pushy.

I'd donate my left testicle to replace the one he'd lost in the Literary Wars.

Then, I'd ask him to mud-wrestle (after he recovered from surgery, of course).

Then, I'd ask him for a loan for my own creative projects.

msquared, just don't tell them what I spilled on you.

MakerofThings, tell me the name and address of your custard shop. If it's the one on Eldon Road (or whatever it's called right there) in Herndon, I've already been there about five times. If not, tell me where it is and I'll show up sometime next week, if I can possibly work it out. And I'll have Clark and Kathy Kidd with me.

You can forget the mud wrestling. If I had that new testicle I'd be too proud to cover it with mud.

Oh, my God! Are you serious?! What a huge honor. I will name a cookie after you.

It is the Del Ray Dreamery in Alexandria. Very close to National Reagan Airport if you ever fly in there. www.delraydreamery.com has maps and directions. We have a webcam but we are working on it at the moment.

I really enjoyed your column about being turned away early from the ice cream shop last year. I am extremely careful about being fair. However,by the same token I have told the Tommy Thompson and the current governor of Wisconsin, Jim Doyle , to get lost when they came begging after 10pm.I am closed on Tuesday so don't come then either.

Small business is a form of self expression.

Going back and replying to the original question of the topic....

I personally would probably not do anything. Although it would be a huge honor, I don't think it would be worth selling my soul over. However, if I must, I'd probably give up acting and sell every book I own.

Makerofthings,
can we get a special Hatrack member cookie if we stop by? [Smile] Not for free, small businesses can't give things away but maybe a cookie with a big H on it or an OSC or something? [Smile] Just a thought...

I probably wouldn't give anything because I would cause Mr. Card to hire a hitman. Not a very respectable thing to do, that. I'm an annoying person, well it depends. If you dislike my sense of humor, which many people do, then you'll hate me. If not, you'll laugh, cry, scream, and then forget that you had a hot dog in your mouth and choke and die(I'd like to add, I'm speaking generally, I'm not threatening OSC.), or just be severely injured.

I'd drive to a book signing if it was in central Florida. [Smile]

I don't get quite as caught up with the whole fame thing as some do. I don't really understand it. I think it would be cool to meet the author who wrote books that I like...but I wouldn't got nuts over it.

Though, it is more than I would do to meet an actor. There aren't any famous actors that I would wait in line to meet, even if they were in my home town.

I've actually had the good fortune to meet Mr. Card.

September 9, 1995 Mr. Card was in Atlanta for a book signing just after the hard cover release of Alvin Journeyman. I had bought the book the day it became available in Atlanta and had read it before the signing. To my great honor, I found out that I was the first person outside of Mr. Card's family and his editors/publishers that Mr. Card had been able to talk to who had read the book.

Now, ten years later, I still treasure the memory of our discussion of the Alvin Maker books. It was almost as much of an honor and priviledge to get to meet Mr. Card as it was and is to get to read his books.

Thank you... always thank you for writing these books.

Adam

I've had chances to meet him. He's had signings in my town.

But honestly I think I'd just go all fan-girl and be totally unable to speak. What do you say to someone who wrote some of your favoritest books in the whole world and whose forum you've camped in for something like 4 years?

::glazed eyes:: "I love your work Mr Card." Ya, I'm sure he's never heard that before.

Or worse... ::open mouth:: "**squeek**"

Would it be totally awful to say that once upon a time I loved Anne McCaffrey more than Mr. Card? But alas, I've fallen in love with many of his books- more than McCaffrey.

But if there ever happened to be an opportunity to meet him without stalking his house in Greensboro, I would. I live in Winston Salem NC, remarkably. What luck ^_^

I am here ever since. It was a translation of ES not EG -- EG was translated long ago, that's how I got hooked [Smile] I got pretty far, but not finished, not even now. I am a bit lazy and while ES is a very good read, immersing in that text makes me depressive, gloomy. I a tad bit oversensitive, I know.

Also, there is no interest in the market. Maybe when the book will come. And then, the powers that be will hand the book to a drone and get a weak translation [Frown]
