I do not think I ever bought a comic book before this month's issue of Ultimate Iron Man. Certainly, I had never heard of Iron Man before.
I thought OSC's story was a good set up but is it normal for a comic book to be so short? I'd rather pay more and get a longer story.
Can anyone tell me: what was the original Iron Man origination story? what changes did OSC make?
I read on another thread that Iron Man is part of the 'Ultimates' team. Is this like the old Justice League cartoon, where Batman and Superman fought together?
Any info appreciated?

As far as I remember Tony Stark got injured in Vietnam and the suit was the only thing that kept him alive. He could take all of the armor off except for the chest which kept his heart going. The ultimates are like the JLA they are a retelling of the regular universe Avengers. The Ultimates line was created to offer people stories about Spiderman, the Avengers etc. without having people worrying about decades of continuity and adding a few twists here and there. I highly recommend ultimate spiderman by Brian Micheal Bendis. Its a great retelling of the classic stories and they are availiable in trade paperback. hope that helps.

So go for the Trade Paperbacks. It's like 5-6 issues of a series put into a book. You can get some of the more popular ones at your bookstore (Ultimate Iron Man should be there, eventually) or at your comic shop.

Kind of, only the Avengers are cooler In the main Marvel Universe, they're called the Avengers, which is basically the Earth's Mightiest Heroes put onto one team.

In issue #1 OSC looks to be setting up Tony Stark as genetically altered (brain cells all over his body, and his skin being unbearably sensitive). The original Tony Stark had no such alterations, he was a regular human being.
A small change = Stark's mother probably wasn't a brilliant geneticist in the original series.

The Avengers cooler than JLA? I'm not a big DC fan myself but even I don't think that's true. Other than Captain America and maybe Iron Man, the Avengers were just a few of Marvels most lackluster heroes that got jammed into one comic because no one would probably but a comic about their individual adventures. I mean . . . Ant Man?

Given some of the promo art for #2, it looks like OSC is going back to a certain oft-visited narrative well for at least a bit of the character concept.
