Yeah, this is prolly a stupid question but I gotta ask. My Gf has a book, The Abyss. No ISBN # inside the flyleaf. Hardbound by Pocket Books. Mylar cover on the dust jacket. Copyright 1989
Outside cover says: Based on an original screenplay by Orson Scott Card A novel by Hugo and Nebula Award winning Author James Cameron Inside cover reverses it. Same for the front Flyleaf.
How would I go about determining several factors.
Printed edition
Which way was it. OSC did the screenplay or did Cameron?
The cover is gray with dark blue wrapping the spine and about 1 1/2 inch of the front and back cover Pages are nice, crisp and clean both in looks and cut. So its not a book club book.
Any ideas?

That is a strange error. OSC wrote the book based on the screenplay by James Cameron. But he also got to base it on actual filmed footage from the movie -- so he didn't just have the words of the screenplay, he saw how the actors and the director brought it to life. Cameron was extremely generous with that and the publisher patient enough for OSC to wait to finish the book until he had seen all the footage.

I didn't think James Cameron had ever won the Hugo or Nebula awards.

In the book "Storyteller" by Michael R Collings, on p. 166 there is a picture of this same book edition, and it says exactly what Bookwyrm has on his personal copy. I wondered about it too.

This is a book club edition (no ISBN, cat. #15581 on bot. right back of dustjacket, no price on dj flap?), with an early dustjacket error, which apparently was corrected, for my copy has OSC as the Hugo and Nebula Award winning Author and Cameron as the screen writer.
Your gf might want to take care of her copy, esp. the dustjacket; the error could be worth something on eBay.

THis actually does sound like my copy of the book club edition; specifically the Science Fiction Book Club.
