I haven't read the First Meetings in the Enderverse but I think that there should be some stories about the First two Bugger Wars and maybe even stories from the ships that ender commanded in EG just an idea... i wanna be a writer so my ideas just go everywhere, and i figure OSC's got the rights so im gonna throw up my ideas to him.

First off T.J. welcome to the board. Your comments are very stirring and insightful, unlike other 'newbies' on the board.

Thanks [Big Grin]

Have any Enderverse short stories, written by Hatrackers, been posted in this forum?

Seems like the perfect chance to play in someone else's universe.

That's not allowed, skillery, since all of OSC's characters and books are copyrighted by him.

Copyright skillery, copyright.

It's not nice to play in other's sand boxes.

Yet here we are playing in the sandbox.

Don't the Card's own these here words we're writing to each other?

Wow, you've got a lot to learn about copyright skillery.

When I say 'sand box,' I mean what you said as 'universe.'

Just please don't start posting stories about the Enderverse on the forum. That would be very detrimental to you.

Here's the tip of the iceberg skillery:

If you submit a work on this website without permission and it is allowed to stay for an undetermined amount of time. It (in the worst case) would mean that you could sue the pants off of Hatrack River Enterprises Inc (for owning the website), Infopop Corporation (for hosting the website), Orson Scott Card (for having this be his official website), and Kathryn H Janitor's real persona (for not finding it and removing it.) At the same time, each of them could counter-sue you for malicious intent. Without saying, the situation would be very bad for all included. It would no doubt in turn, shut down the forum part of the website, which would have everyone blaming you for it.

Also, every character, made up place, and situation that deals with any aspect of his books are copyrighted to Orson Scott Card. Use of that material without permission is strictly prohibited. Please don't do it.

I'm not much of a writer anyway.

Now I'm wondering if such a play area could be created: you enter the play area, and you sign away the rights to whatever you create there to OSC.

Copyright-infringing post found and deleted.

Thanks for the warning.

Wish I were in 7th grade again, where you get to write alternate endings and stuff for other people's stories.

well all this is great but it still hardly answers my question HAVE THEY BEEN WRITTEN? and if they havent WHY NOT!? and u really cant say copyright fifty billion times unless you ask the man himself, and if you did get permission its red tape everywhere to C.Y.A. im just suggesting... i could write them and not publish and only my friends would know and if some one did know outside them and no one could do anything cause i'd have to make money, but im not that kind of person i'd give OSC my writing and let him make all the money, i still got plenty of non-infringing ideas to make me a pretty penny

ok my dad just corrected me on something i cant write it unless i do have his permission but it is true that if i did write it and told only my friends it wouldnt really matter. so any lawers im not going to write them unless i have documented permission from Mr. Card

Near the bottom of this page:

quote:
Question
How do you feel about your fans writing "fanfiction" using characters that are already established by you (e.g, Ender, Valetine, etc.)?

OSC Answers
I'm flattered; and then, if they try to publish it (including on the net) except in very restricted circumstances, I will sue, because if I do NOT act vigorously to protect my copyright, I will lose that copyright -- and that is the only inheritance I have to leave my family. So fan fiction, while flattering, is also an attack on my means of livelihood. It is also a poor substitute for the writers' inventing their own characters and situations. It does not help them as writers; it can easily harm me; and those who care about my stories and characters know that what I write is "real" and has authority, and what fans write is not and does not. So it's all pointless. I'd prefer simply to ignore it when it happens, but the way copyright law functions, I am told that I cannot ignore it. So there it is.

The four stories in First Meetings are:
Polish Boy, which is about Ender's father when he was little
Teacher's Pest, which is about how Ender's parents met
Ender's Game, the original novella
Investment Counselor, which is about how Ender met Jane

I could be wrong, but isn't it true that copyrights are only good for 50 years? So that in the 2030's anyone and their brother can write about Ender. Not that anyone should, but that's my understanding.

Copyrights can be renewed. And the clock doesn't start ticking until the author's death, I believe. And only then if the estate doesn't act.

Just keep in mind that Allusion is making a reference to a work - not playing on a concept.

If kacard's still reading this, I was wondering how an author felt about the time after death being changed to 75 years (yea, I know it was a while ago, I didn't find out until I read Asimov's autobiography). I know a lot of nonwriter people are upset by it, does an author have a different perspective?

Don't know that the author cares that much either way -- now the author's heirs might be a different story [Smile]

is it possible to buy a copyright law forever? and just have his family keep watch for anything that resembles anything he wrote? lol that would keep everyone in shape to know that no time in their lifetime can they write or copy anything that OSC did...i wonder how much that would cost? [Smile]

EDIT: didnt want to make another post...lol...skillery i believe u said in one of ur other posts (at the top) that u wish u were in 7th grade so u could write alternate endings....nothing is really stopping you from WRITING them...you just cant publish them on the internet and show them to anybody! (makes ya feel good dont it?)

PS. Im in 8th grade and we are still writing altermate endings to books....Great Expectations...Shakesphere...so annoying school is....

I never got to write alternate endings to anything! [Grumble] After 6th grade we stopped writing anything that wasn't a persuasive essay! I think I get to take a creative writing class next year though. (I'm in 11th grade now.)

That's the current standing. But as we get closer to December 15, 2041 I'm sure that length of the copyright will get more time tacked on to it.

how do you know when OSC will die and plus he's giving the rights to his children, that means royalties for them they'll prolly buy an extra lifetime. Or at least they should seems like a smart thing to me

December 15 2041 has nothing to do with when (if?) OSC will pass on to the great Battle School in the Sky.

It is 75 years from the death of Walt Disney. Mickey Mouse wil NEVER be allowed to enter into the public domain.

My prophetic skills aren't quite that good yet.

Hey Kristine. Can I write stories about Endor under the pen name Orsen Scot Carde and get them published, or will Scott be mad?

[Wink]

PS These fanfic threads that pop up periodically crack me up.
